This is the third celebrity death that has hit close to home for me.
The first was when Brad McCrimmon went down in that Russian plane crash. It seemed unreal that ‘Sarge’, whom I remembered so vividly from the '89 Cup run, who served as captain of the Flames and later came back as an assistant coach, just wasn't here anymore.
The second had nothing to do with hockey: Dave Wolverton (who also wrote as David Farland), the well-known fantasy writer. He was a mentor of mine for a while (and mentored a lot of writers you've actually heard of, too, such as Stephenie Meyer, the author of Twilight). Late in 2021 he was hired by a major publisher to start and edit a new fantasy line for them, and I was spoiling for a chance to work with him again. Less than a month later, he fell down a flight of stairs and died of a brain injury. That one still feels unreal (but makes me nervous when I'm going down my own stairs).
This one? What seems to hurt most is the way we all found out about it – from some Joe Schmuckatelli on social media, who had no right to blab about it and no credibility, but turned out to be telling the truth. It took me back to my twenties, when a friend of mine committed suicide. I found out by a phone call the following day, when a mutual friend phoned me:
‘Did you hear about Reed?’ he asked.
‘No, what happened?’
‘He woke up this morning and he was dead,’ said Mr. Tact.
I don't believe in shooting the messenger, but when the messenger makes it about himself instead of the message, I am very strongly tempted. Johnny Hockey deserved better, and his family needed better, than to have his death announced by a self-promoting twerp on the Internet. That made it hurt even worse.

I still can't believe it. I don't want to believe it to be true.
Rest In Peace Johnny Hockey. I hope you have plenty of purple Gatorade up there in the rink in the sky.

The only player other than McDonald I have ever had his name stitched on a jersey. Was a gut punch when he left, but this is beyond upsetting. My thoughts are with his parents. A parent should never see a child die before them, let alone two at the same time.

This is the side effect of driving drunk and killing someone. The wife of Meredith Gaudeau is left to raise the 2 children she and Johnny brought into this world. It breaks my heart into so many pieces that I can't begin to put it back together again. All because some ####ing fool decided it was okay to drink and drive 🤬
My heart goes out to Meredith and the family for such a devastating loss.

Been twisted up about this all day. Such a shocking and senseless loss. Haven’t been active on CalgaryPuck in the last couple of years. It's been reassuring to read through the thread and see a lot of the familiar accounts from the post-Iginla rebuild posting their thoughts.

Still haven't processed this. Kinda ignored the news all day. ####in unreal.
Gemstone lights will be red today with the rest of Calgary. RIP brother.
My neighbours kid is an undersized hockey player who went to a Flames development camp this summer, thanks to the inspiration from you Johnny. Him and thousands of others think they can do it because you did.
That poor goddamn beautiful family. This one really stings. ####s sake. #### you sean higgins, you piece of ####

Not to take away from him getting paid out, but his family will be fine as his estimated career earnings are around $62mil to this point, plus it looks like $7.5mil coming.

The gofundme is for Matthew's family
Edit: didn't see the quote you were replying to was with reference to Johnny's contract getting paid out

The contracts are insured by an nhl mandated, team sponsored, life or accidental death claim which covers non hockey accidents.
The blue jackets won’t be responsible for paying, but the family will receive the full contract.

I've been hesitant to share this, as I don't want people to mis-interpret this, but I can;t get it out of my head.
I often think about how the existence of my daughter is the result of hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions) of little decisions, that if any of them are different, means she isn't in my life. Maybe I have a kid still. A different kid. But not her. Life's miracles are the culmination of these moments. But today is a reminder that so are life's tragedies.
There is an alternative timeline where Johnny re-signs with the Flames, breaks all the records, and becomes the greatest Flame. And he and Sean grow into the aging vets on the team, mentoring the next generation.
Ultimately the decision that cost Johnny and Matty their lives was made by the murderer who got behind the wheel drunk. But I just can't get it out of my head that it wasn't supposed to be like this. None of it.
