As if it wasn't tragic enough, their sisters wedding was supposed to be today, they were both going to be groomsmen.

Day before the sister’s wedding is an even bigger dagger and if I’m reading that right the driver passed on the right as they moved over to give the Gaudreau’s space?

Rest in peace Johnny and Matthew. I am absolutely gutted for that poor family. To be gathering for a wedding and dealing with this. So tragic!!

If I’m not mistaken it was a CBJ v CGY game where a fan was struck and killed by a puck. Strange, sad interweaving of tragedy between these two clubs

Gonna miss you Johnny

This is beyond sad. Such a close knit family, I can't imagine the pain Guy and his wife are feeling right now.

RIP.

Yes. It was a young girl from a shot from Derek Morris. I think netting behind the net was put in place right after this.

I'll echo the comments about drunk driving because it isn't 1975 anymore and everyone should know better.

BUT...it should also be said that driving aggressively is just as much an issue, with or without alcohol. Every day I see needlessly risky decisions by drivers, and I'm positive that they're not all under the influence. It's just a careless and selfish act to drive without concern for others because you want to get somewhere faster. You saving 10 seconds of drive time is not worth risking the lives of others.

Please, slow down, drive sensibly, obey the rules of the road, and NEVER drive under the influence (also...put the goddam phone down!).

Death by motor vehicle collision still occurs at a rate of 13.8 per 100 000. That's the same rate as all kidney diseases combined, or chronic liver diseases. Collisions are almost entirely preventable. Do your part to prevent them.

Yeah. SUV moves to the middle of the road to go around the cyclists. Dude decides, well then, I’m gonna pass on the other side (which means passing on the shoulder). Either he was mad because he thought the SUV was blocking him from passing on the left or maybe he thought the SUV was turning left like I do on highway 8 to get into my driveway.

RIP. One of my favourite players of all time. Followed him from the draft until today.
As a father of two young kids this hits even harder.

I texted this to the fan.

Johnny has changed hockey. The amount of players in western Canada that will be coming into the league soon and are small are better because of Johnny. I never buy hockey jerseys but I’ve probably bought 10 Johnny jerseys for my kids as they grew up. Holding one now while my very undersized kid is at his first WHL camp in the US. Johnny made the unbelievable, believable for so many kids.

Johnny was my 6 year old son’s favourite player by far. I think he really drew in the young fans. My wife said “I’m gonna email the flames and invite Johnny to our son’s birthday”. I thought that was a pretty crazy notion. A while later my son got a letter and it was from Johnny stating that he was really busy and couldn’t come but sent him a personalized 8x10 signed colour picture that we framed. He still has it on his wall. He just celebrated his 16th birthday and still has the picture in his room. He was the one that told me about Johnny’s passing last night. Very very sad.

Drunk, irresponsible, or just selfish. Regardless of why people drive like losers, people who drive this way are pieces of ####.

But driving drunk is certainly a step beyond.

You're right. It was March 16, 2002 that Brittanie Cecil was hit in the head by a puck. She died two days later.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Brittanie_Cecil

Another interweaving is that Dave King was the coach of the BJs at the time.
