Coleman is a lot bigger.
I think that's the issue.
Pelletier isn't big enough to be a highly effective physical energy player
And he's not skilled enough to play up your lineup and on the PP.
I don't know what he is.

He didn't have a good year, it's true. But you don't have to try and over-sell it. Let's actually see what a 23 year old Pelletier looks like, before we claim it's terrible.

All it takes is 37 games in the NHL to know whether a player will be good. /s

He has exactly one year of injury "History".
Yes, you are being very hyperbolic.

To me, Pelletier's upside is a 15-20 goal Andrew Mangiapane type player without the odd 35 goal season aberration. No science behind this, just a gut feeling.

Well you know, you get hurt, you cant work out as much and sit around a lot more and that Poutine starts adding up pretty fast...

That's pretty decent for someone his height, if true.
From photos, he does look like he has a lot of upper body strength, but the way he gets knocked off balance so easily, makes me wonder if leg strength is the issue.

He isn't small by NHL standards and really, I don't see that as a detractor from his ability to be a pest/energy guy. There have been plenty of players with his size profile and lesser skill sets have solid two way "energy guy" careers.
Tyler Kennedy, Matt Cooke etc were not much different physically and Pelletier is still likely to add weight somewhat.

Those guys are 5'11, and JP is 5'9.
You can find a lot of guys who are 5'11 and effective.
You can't find a lot of guys 5'9 that play that role.
Not saying it's impossible. But its the exception.

Hopefully he does not bust but have not seen enough of him to make an opinion on what he could be. Few nice plays but 50/50 he turns out to be an everyday NHL’er
Hopefully he is more like Backlund and not a Klimchuk

And it isn't just height, but shorter players typically have shorter reach as well. This makes it harder to receive passes or using your stick to play defense. Some smaller players compensate by using longer sticks for a player of their height (Spurgeon for example). Typically if you are short, you need to either be really fast or really good at holding on to the puck, preferably both. Based on Pelletier's limited NHL games, we haven't really seen that yet. Fully recognizing that he has had injury issues. Even in the games he played in the NHL, it's hard to know if he was even 100% healthy.
I really want to see what he can do in the NHL next season if he is healthy. I am unconvinced of his upside, but not necessarily pessimistic. We just need to see more to really know.

Trouba really destroyed his development. I was interested in seeing if he could take a step after a summer of training.
Getting steamrolled right off the hop was not the best thing.
