Matt Short doesn't actually think that boneyard aircraft could be made functional does he?

He's not wrong.

The US is also sitting on massive amounts of troops that could be deployed to Ukraine:

To be fair some boneyards are specifically for planes that are retired and parked but kept in half-decent shape if they ever need be returned to service. They're not all just scrapyards or to keep spare parts around

But I'm not so sure how feasible it is just to hand over hundreds of older models that don't have the support or active training networks anymore

Sure they could send old Tomcats, Eagles and Hornets but who would fly and maintain them?

Personally I think it would be easier to train crews on Predator and Reaper drones. a few of dozen of those fully equipped would freak out the dirty Russians back to the motherland.

US cut up every single Tomcat part in their boneyards to deny Iran ever getting any spare parts. Those are gone.

As for other planes, most gone yard planes are kept around for parts only and the few intact spares would take hundreds to thousands of hours to restore to flying shape. The maintenance and pilot training would also be nuts. It was almost 10 months for the last batch of pilots Ukraine sent to get trained.

BicMac is back in Ukraine, serving with a drone unit now, he's got even more to tell! Just an incredibly interesting, entertaining and informative interview, can not recommend enough.

Oh, and he's got his own youtube channel now.

In lesser news, Peruns latest video on decoys was again super informative, and interesting if you're into this kind of stuff.

While this is interesting and a first, if Kyiv Independent is to be trusted, the drone had "veered off course", had been flying in Belarussian airspace for more than 20 minutes, and it was probably shot down for simple safety reasons. (Shaheds have a 40-50kg payload (depending on the source), which is a pretty nasty bang if it drops near anything.)

That said: Belarussian military reportedly is pretty pro-Ukraine and Lukashenkos support is still on thin ice, and this isn't the first Russian drone that has flown off course and into Ukraine...

We could see Lukashenko starting to distance himself from Putin, especially with the war not going that great.

If Belarus shooting down Russian drones flying over their territory is true, that is really interesting and weird. It's hard to believe that Lukashenko would give the order to do that and makes me wonder if someone else is making the decisions. I just can't imagine that he would go against Putin.

I fully believe he knew and approved the action.

As mentioned above it if went off course and was gonna hit a Belarus area then shooting it down makes sense.

That's a shame, would have significantly brightened my spirits to hear that news. Outside of Putin that cat seems like one of the most evil and vile people on team Russia.
