-run hangover
-worse defense
-oldest team getting older
-new coach effect wearing off, potentially exposing a guy with very little experience at this level of hockey
-potential for injury bug coming back after staying away last year
-dark cloud of Draisaitl uncertainty which could breed bad blood knowing their toxic culture

A slide to 9th would be amazing and not surprising.

Not if you’re weighing the rumoured wife thing heavily.
Money wise, if you consider how much he ends up with in his pockets, there are not 29 other teams. Of the more favorable tax locations, who has the space or ice to warrant the cost? Florida? No. Tampa? Possibly . Dallas? Don’t know. Vegas? Most likely.
The other thing taking teams off the list is his buddy being available the following year.
While it’s all speculation on what is driving his decision, (wife, money, lifestyle, winning), in the end, when a guy signs long term, winning is at the bottom of that list.

Reminder, basically the same team last season needed a 16-game win streak to finish the season 9th overall.
They're not near as good as a 16-game win streak entails, nor are they as bad as 2-9-1 record to start the year. Somewhere in the middle. Remove both hot and cold runs and they played at a 0.609 win % the remainder of the season. Apply that all season and they are a 99 point team. Just as likely to drop down 5 points as they are to be back at 104 points like last year.

That 16 game winning streak came after the new coach bump, iirc. That team has a history of quickly tuning out coaches and just doing their thing. It will be interesting to see if Knob was maintain any control was a new season begins.

Their flopping antics and PP will win it's share of games.
But I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they return to that team thar needs to win 5-4 trying to out-score their warts. Especially when you're shorthanded from day one because of cap restraints and one injury away from double shifting already questionable D.
I also don't think some of the off season pickups will be nearly as fruitful as they believe (they seldom are). And there's only so many slots next to McBuffer and 50% of the time Leon "nhl center" Draisaitl is taking up one.

You mean having the least amount of man games lost to injury in the entire NHL isn't repeatable?

Curious what that list looks like if you filter for top 6F, 4D, & 1G….
Edit, my bad, it was the season before CB missed a ton of time.

Law of averages really needs to clamp down on these a-holes this year.
That goes for PP efficiency, injuries, and generally things breaking their way because they've had it easy street for half a decade (and still managed to come out without any hardware).

I think the law of averages will self-correct this season for them… a major injury to McDavid and/or Draisaitl that lasts for 3-4 months. Then the concern for us Flames fans will be the only thing their team can win - draft lotteries. Not that it will matter in the end. E=NG

When the team tune out Knob, no worries, there is always Joel Q waiting on the sideline.

I'm betting that the Conna is producing another documentary.
Conna McPfffft, road to glory.
He'll have camera's following him around through the whole season as he chase the expected cup and his road to glory.
Personal interviews with everyone who has played with him and coached him telling us about what a amazing standup guy.
Slow motion scenes of him rescuing puppies from an explosive van driven by terrorists.
Him sternly but kindly counselling his team mates to pass him the puck more while he runs practices and knobby the coaching elf nods knowingly in the back ground.
Conna attending draft meetings, and the meetings between the scouts and management at the trade deadline, as the Oilers make some "Brilliant trades".
Scenes of him and Drai hanging out together, laughing together, hugging lots, taking baths together on the road. you know crossing the streams.
Oh wait, sorry about that, that part will end up on the editing room floor, or Stan Bowman's private collection.
The Oilers will spend millions on flashy production values, helicopter flyovers, the use of head mounted steady cams on the trainers head during the game.
Then by Christmas when they're out of the playoffs, the project will be cancelled, and the memory sticks burned.

I imagine they’re scheduled to get a bunch of tired teams while rested in both home and away situations as usual. Might not get as many back up goalies though this year.
