I think the Oilers are even worse at developing than they are at drafting.
Their few draft picks that turn out are usually developed by other teams.

It's going to be so gross in the upcoming weeks seeing all the media fanboys tripping over themselves to predict an Oilers cup win next spring.

Going to be more the sweeter when they bounce early.

Let's put ourselves in Pissy's shoes (eww)

Pros of signing
He is playing with one of the best offensive players to ever play the game.
He can get an extra year.
He is completely unaccountable for defensive play.
He can lock in an extension without risk of getting hurt this year.

Pros of Free Agency
He can play anywhere he chooses that makes him an offer (Insert M. Tkachuk life experience here)
He can go to a market with less media scrutiny.
He can wear flip flops to work if he chooses right.
His fiance will likely be happier somewhere else.
He can go to a lower tax jurisdiction.
He can play multiple offers against each other to take advantage of Free Agent Frenzy and get much more than he likely would in Edmonton
No one will be talking discounts
He can go to an actual contender with solid goaltending, defence and a solid supporting core.
No Staples. No Stauffer. No Edmonton media.

What on earth are people talking about he might sign in Edmonton? In what world does that make sense?

Not disputing, but if the ‘Wife Narrative’ is correct, that leaves SoCal and NY for lots of acting.

Those 2 markets have higher taxes than AB, and much higher cost of living.

If it’s about money, Edmonton may be the best option, with the additional year + desperation.

The only argument I've seen as to why Draisatl will surely re-sign is because he only wants to play with McDavid, and McDavid only wants to play with Draisatl, and somehow the Oilers are the only place that can happen.

Not only is the notion that two grown men must keep playing together absurd, if that is the case for some bizarre reason there are other teams that could find ways to fit both.

You didn't consider the 29 other options that he has.

I think one reason to follow McDavid (which is why he won’t sign before McDavid does) is that he will never be blamed for the under performance of the team and he historically will be thought of a better player than if he were running his own line against the top D pair and center and his own power play. That reduction in scrutiny may be of value to him over being the guy.

That doesn’t make Edmonton the answer but it is an advantage that only a few centers in the league can offer.

There is no reason for him to sign early even if planning to stay in Edmonton. Even in an ACL or Achilles injury scenario some team will give him 7 x 10 million a season and bet on him recovering.

I re-iterate this.

People seem to forget that for the first few months they were the Worst Team in the League!

They got given every break in the book and a few new ones and once Florida sobered up they clowned them rather easily.

And they just got older, more suspect defensively and their goaltending is almost literally a giant question-mark with pads and a glove.

This is really the only reason I think he would re-sign in Edmonton. It could be the better long term and less risky financial choice.

This is maybe a stupid question, but hypothetically, could a player just sign a 1 year deal with another team and then later sign a 7 or 8 year extension thereby making the whole 8 year thing moot? Or are there rules against that?

Add on, they got slower, less defensively aware. Their blueline looks like hot garbage. No more new coach bump.

I have this feeling that this is going to be a very bad year for the Oil versus expectations. I mean our division is clown shoes, but still.
