It's 100% because they expect him to drop an n-bomb if he's hot-micd

So that she can zing him with a "Mr President, I'm speaking"
Harris team knows he can't appear presidential on his own for the entirety of the debate, so keep the mics open. Trump team wants to minimize the amount of words he airs, so mute mics.
Trump talking over another candidate is old news... He did it to Hillary and to Biden. Harris team is prepared for it.
Low key, I don't think Harris wants to debate in the traditional sense. She's going for soundbites. Anything that showcases Trump's anger, incompetence and weirdness will be amplified on social media via Harris HQ.

This. The chances of Trump saying something stupid are high. The chances are even higher if he has a hot mic.
They know he’ll just try to talk over her. So, if they’re prepared for that, it’s pretty easy to use it to their advantage.

It's a bold move.
Honestly, Trumps overtalking belligerence just doesn't play as well against a black woman as it does against an old white man. He's already a well documented misogynist, interrupting and talking over a woman won't work the same as it did against Biden. Especially for many women who will recognize it all too well in their daily lives.
And it worked against Hillary because she was not well liked in general, even by many women, with decades of propaganda behind her and people already kind of sick of her overall. I also think Harris has a way better tool box to clap back at Trump whereas Clinton just didn't have that type of tongue and Biden was too geriatric to respond.

Yeah, all I've ever heard before from those that support the Dems was how Trump absolutely needs to be muted when he's not answering for a fair debate. Going to be interesting to see how the reactions are to Harris' camp advocating for hot mics instead.

No comment on it playing better against white folk vs. black, but during that recent panel interview that Trump was on (think it was NAACP?), Trump did plenty of overtalking and often wouldn't answer the question he was asked while doing that.

"Mr. Trump."
That really annoys him, as his trials revealed.

They probably want the hot mic so Harris can go after Trump when he lies.

Yup, good call. Don't give him the legitimacy of the presidential office.

The chances of him saying something stupid, racist, or sexist are 100%, so I like the hot mic idea. The Harris team obviously wants to see him hang himself with his own words, which he definitely will. Dude can't help himself.

I think this is it. The moderators won't live fact check him so she has to. Seems dangerous to me, but I guess they know what they're doing given I'm not sitting in debate prep.

The latest stupidity Trump voters have latched onto is Walz posting photos of him walking his dog Scout at the dog park. There's a photo of Walz petting a light brown dog, but other photos of Scout is a black dog.
Because you can't take a photo of a man petting other dog??
They're calling Walz a liar. A Congressman even called him "creepy" and "weird" (which is hilarious how they keep franticly trying to use those in retaliation) over it.
Walz' Instagram even has a video of Walz and Scout AND the light brown dog at the dog park.
MAGA lives in their alternative facts reality.

The hot mic request also sets up infighting within the Trump campaign. Obviously Trump himself would want a hot mic, but his handlers definitely don't

Once the Democrats took themselves and Trump seriously, it's game over. MAGA has nothing.

I don't understand why people are acting like this is over or that Trump is toast. Yeah, the coverage has been lopsided and the Dems have pitched a no hitter for weeks basically but look at recent swing state polls. They're all within like... 2 points. Recent PA polls have Trump up, again within the MOE. So what happens when something doesn't go perfectly for Harris for a week or two?
I am still very nervous about this outcome.

Trump has a high floor and low ceiling. Ultimately, this is a turnout election and there are just more democrat voters. As was mentioned here, 20 million boomers have died and 40 million new voters since 2016.
The key is that at the DNC and the campaign trail and the upcoming debates, the Harris team is taking Trump seriously and combatting him instead of dismissing him as a clown. They were not prepared for him in 2016, they are now.
Trump is a political giant now. Yeah, he may be a malevolent giant and wants to steer the US into a dictatorship but that is what he is and guys like him are dangerous and must be taken seriously. He's trying the same tropes against a woman candidate, a little sexist and a little racist.

In 2016, I think the Dems made a couple of crucial mistakes. First was attacking people supporting Trump and not recognizing that some them were being pushed in that direction, but could still be pulled back. Shaming them instead of showing how the Dems could help them didn't help. It's partly why the MAGA movement gained more steam. It's one of the reasons why I think Andy Beshear is a good asset for the party.
The other was relying too much on polls to dictate their strategy.

Dems have had a nice 6 weeks, especially when you consider they were virtually dead after Trump got shot at. They've probably closed the gap enough that I would give Trump a 55-45 advantage at this point. And I know people are gonna say how can you think that, but I'm sorry until Americans are not, relatively speaking, the dumbest people on earth, Trump should be considered the favorite. Assuming otherwise allows for even that 0.5% complacency that will allow him to win. Americans do not deserve the benefit of the doubt, a normal country would have Trump not even nominated, then down 20 if he were somehow nominated, instead of the coinflip this currently is.
