The Flames nearly won a Stanley Cup with an elite goalie, an elite winger, and good coaching. The rest of the team was scrappy but otherwise nothing to write home about, at least on paper.
They've hardly reached the second round since.
The Flames are in the Sens level of playoff success.

It would be so very Flames-esque to make the playoffs in a year we need them to be bad enough to secure a top 10 pick so we don't have to worry about the Monahan trade conditions. This thread is a curse.
They could be at the top of the standings going into November and I would still feel confident they will be drafting top 5. This is going to be one of the worst Flames teams in some time. Possibly worst ever.
lol exactly
Even with all those supposedly good/great players they were terrible
Do you remember why they were so bad? Hint: I just told you. They had just completely changed their defensive system and were making bonehead errors all the time.
This team is basically the same crew that finished the season 8-13, with a few parts swapped out and no proven goalies. I expect them to be closer to last overall than to a wildcard spot.

The Sens are a pretty bad comparable. They've been far more bipolar. A final and 2 conference finals since 2006, but also not playoffs since 2017.
On topic....I'd be shocked if the Flames made the playoffs, and OP has a pretty good list of what needs to happen to make that so. I was also shocked when Johnny led the Flames into the playoffs so early. I want a high draft pick, but having the Flames making the playoffs likely means Wolf emerging as an elite goaltender, which is pretty great in itself.

There is zero chance they end up being the worst team ever. They will not finish with less than 21 points lol.

He said Flames team. Not the worst team of all time lol.
Looking at the roster and comparing it against terrible Flames teams of past, yeah they don’t look so bad. But the league is much more talented and deeper now.

Ah, my bad. Still, they won't outsuck those Young Guns teams.
Looking at this logically....this team just lost hanifin, tanev, markstrom, mangiapane, zadorov and their number one centre, and I might add these departed players could not get this team over the hump and into the playoffs....and some believe ," you never know" or " some sleeper team surprises the league"....come on...the Calgary flames are not that team

I think everyone really knows they are not going to make the playoffs, bar Wolf bringing an unreal season.
I'll stick with you never know, as you might win the lottery too....

That was a lame excuse then and is now...the defense and forwards are certainly improved from the last 20 games. Goaltending remains to be seen but Wolf played many of those games and Markstrom wasn't exactly stellar down the stretch anyway.

Defense should be miles better than the end of last year. Some of the line ups had 2 or 3 players that shouldn't even be in the NHL. All while being with the team for like a week. Pachal cracked 20 a few times. Miromanov was getting treated like a top pairing guy. Hanley cracked 20 minutes.
Give them a training camp and throw in Bahl and that's a massive improvement. Should Bahl, Miro, and Bean be in a teams top 4? Probably not but it's still miles better than what was going on last year
Yeah playoffs are highly unlikely nobody is saying otherwise but this team isn't as bad as some seem to think.
Flames lost some big names but guys like Zadorov, Lindholm, Mangi, were playing like crap anyway.
They certainly miss Tanev, Hanifin, Markstom but it will be interesting to see how others step up. I'm not conceding a bottom 5 finish, in fact I bet against it.
Really I could see anything from a bottom 2 finish to making the playoffs, generally the NHL is pretty tight and luck plays a big factor. I don't see them being as clearly bad as teams like Chicago and San Jose were last year (not even close TBH).
Part of me thinks they should be bad, but I also have this weird gut feeling that they are going to go 14-15 on us and have an unexpected playoff season.
Huberdeau, Kadri, Backlund, Coleman, Zary, Sharangovich, Mantha, Pospisil, Kuzmenko, Lomberg, Rooney, Pelletier, Coronato...that forward group isn't that bad TBH. It lacks top end talent, but is pretty deep.
Weegar, Andersson, Bahl, Pachal, Bean, Miromanov, Hanely...that's pretty bad but you never know if somebody like Solovoyov, Poirier, or even Parekh surprises with a strong camp and takes a top 4 spot. All of Bahl, Bean, Pachal, and Miromanov are pretty much unknown at this point too in terms of what their top end potential is.
Really the biggest factor is Wolf...if Wolf has growing pains then it's a bottom 5 finish...if Wolf does what Wolf has done in every league he's ever played in and ends up being a top 10 goalie...then the team might surprise.

That's yet to be determined. I think this team is in the running for worst team in the league and nobody here can convince me that they will be a playoff team as it's just not going to happen as even if a lot of things go right they would still be drafting at around the same spot they did this season.

Nobody here is trying to, not one person has said they are going to make the playoffs. They aren't the worst team in the league though...not even within 10 points.
Are all three going to happen? Likely not. Is it possible? I'd say yes.
A successful year for Zary is probably 40 points playing exclusively down the middle. He’s almost certainly not ready to do the heavy lifting required of a playoff team.
