I think there is still some bottoming out to do yet (about a years worth)

So, to make the playoffs, sows need to grow wings

It would be so very Flames-esque to make the playoffs in a year we need them to be bad enough to secure a top 10 pick so we don't have to worry about the Monahan trade conditions. This thread is a curse.

Sixteen other teams need to implode.

The powerplay of Huberdeau-Kadri-Sharangovich-Weegar-Kuzmenko was operating at close to 24%, which I believe was 11th in the league.

Funny thing is, they could have a top-10 powerplay and still draft top-3 if the goalies are mid behind a ragtag blue line.

Vets have good year (Huberdeau, Kadri, Coleman, Weegar, Andersson, Backlund)
Powerplay improvement with Kuzmenko full time
Young D stepping up
Biggest one will be a goalie grasping the starters role

Lots of things will have to click. Add in no injuries and good coaching.

If the goalies are half decent I don’t think we’ll be as bad as everyone thinks. If the goalies suck we could finish last.

As long as the team finishes just out of the playoffs I'll be happy.

I don't expect it to happen or anything but people were talking the exact same way in 14-15...its not as insane as some think. Like really how good was a team like LA last season?
If the Flames made the playoffs it means Wolf and others are absolute stars, it wouldn't be as bad as some seem to think.

The Flames with Zadorov, Hanifin, Tanev, Lindholm, Markstom were an amazing....one game under .500 the day the first of them were traded and the Flames finished

you guessed it

One game under .500

We don't have to worry unless Florida is terrible

Flames make the playoffs the worst possible pick they give up is 17 why would that be so bad? I am more worried about them giving up the 11th pick that feels flamesy to me

A lottttttttttttttt...

They would need at least 2 players to emerge as budding stars and one would need to be the goalie.

The Flames went 2-7-1 in their first 10 games. They had just completely changed their defensive system and the players were in disarray. On any given night, some of them were playing zone defence, some were slipping back to man defence, and some were just lost.

When Zadorov was traded, they were 9-10-3. That means that in the intervening 12 games, they went 7-3-2. Subsequent results showed that Zadorov was making little difference one way or the other, so it's silly to cherry-pick that date for comparison purposes.

On February 28, when Tanev was traded, they were 29-25-5, and they were also four games over .500 on March 6 when Hanifin was traded.

After the first 10 games, the team went 28-19-4 leading up to the Hanifin trade. That's a .588 winning percentage, which would normally put a team on the playoff bubble if it extended over a full season. But because of the bad start, they were nowhere near a playoff spot, which is why they sold off so many players and re-signed so few.

After the Hanifin trade, the team was 8-13-0 for a .381 winning percentage. That's not ‘one game below .500’ territory, that's ‘flirting with last overall’ territory.

Since then, they've shipped out Markstrom, Mangiapane, Kylington, and Greer (plus a couple of depth D), and added Mantha, Lomberg, Bean, Bahl, and Cooley. I don't see how this team is better now than it was in March and April.

lol exactly
Even with all those supposedly good/great players they were terrible

whats the worst that could happen? I bet they start better this season than last...like I said I highly doubt they make the playoffs but its not much different than 14-15 going in. In fact I think this team is better than that one.

Flames had half a team that had a foot out the door last season

I also think the Flames will be adding before game one either via waivers or talking bad contracts (not necessarily bad players)

personally I think Wolf is better and more ready than people think

Isn’t this the worst possible outcome?

Why on earth …

I'd like a hot start just to get my hopes up.

Let's fall from glory to a non-playoff finish instead of nipping at the heels of teams all season only to give up at the 3/4 mark.

The Flames nearly won a Stanley Cup with an elite goalie, an elite winger, and good coaching. The rest of the team was scrappy but otherwise nothing to write home about, at least on paper.
