Red Wings are in a similar situation with Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider, but I believe the Red Wings have more cap to work with. But that, too, would be one hell of a swindle.
I think the problem is the draft picks involved. Each would cost a 1st +, and teams with cap are low in the standings and don't want to lose their first round pick.

$6,871,374 - $9,161,834 1 1st-round pick, 1 2nd-round pick, 1 3rd-round pick
$9,161,834 - $11,452,294 2 1st-round picks, 1 2nd-round pick, 1 3rd-round pick
$11,452,294 or more 4 1st-round picks
No doubt it is a potentially steep price. But if you're a contender that needs a goalie and these first round picks would likely be late round picks, why not? If you're a division rival with the Bruins, even better. Bruins are almost guaranteed to match.

Spending money and premium draft picks for a…goaltender? I think teams are smarter than that now. Well, other than New Jersey, but even they demanded a discount.

If you are a contender it is unlikely you have your own picks to even make this play, nor do you have the cap space to just add 9 mil without anything or multiples going out.

I don't think they are actually.
I suspect that they match one of them and let one of them go. Logic would say they match Holloway, but I wouldn't be surprised if they really try to keep Broberg.
And then they will ITR Kane and trade someone like Ceci, or even get rid of a body like Ryan.

Sadly I don't think it's as dire as people are making it out to be. Love the move by St. Louis but I don't think they are totally ####ed.

I don't think it would ruin their chances for next season if they lost both players. It would just stutter the team for future years is all. Not dire either way.

They were already on the road to destination ####ed. Their roster is a disaster outside of one line. Losing back to back first round draft picks of theirs at this stage of their roster growth is a huge loss. Especially if it’s Broberg, strictly positionally. They aren’t swimming in tradable assets and they already have a tough time with UFAs.

They have always had a depth issue and have been forced to keep kicking that can down the road and the help from home grown talent. Potentially losing any of the 2 is a step back that will take multiple years. Only saving grace is they were able to add Savoie this off season.

Seeing what's being posted online is funny. Greaser fans are under the impression they can magically get the cap space to sign both of them. Trade Ceci, ltir Kane, resign dry eyes at a team friendly deal. Too funny.

Apparently Friedman said Broberg was looking for 1.8 and Holloway for 1.2. If that's the case, the Oilers should have signed them already.

If the Oilers match one or both of these contracts, they will again be elevated to blue chip status (that should be paid under-market). LOL.

The part I love is that it is a blow to the arrogance of that crowd.

We're the Oilers, everyone wants to be here and play with Mcdavid. We're the Oilers everyone loves us, no one will ever offer sheet our players....

I'm fairly certain that a lot of the league is not happy with the way they keep picking up players and staff that were supposed to receive the Colin Kaepernick treatment.

They are already ####ed, this just makes it a bit worse...after this season the door is slamming shut no matter what happens and it only gets worse.

It's not ideal though. Kane situation is tricky because his surgery is unlikely to be season ending and while they can probably move Ceci I'm not sure if that makes them better especially if they are moving him to keep Holloway. It's even a gamble that Broberg could replace Ceci's minutes as he really only flashed briefly in the playoffs which is too small of a sample size to conclude he's turned the corner.

Well this will be interesting -- I've been asked out of the blue to go on Edmonton sports radio 1440 tomorrow morning at 9 AM to give my thoughts on the offer sheets and the Oilers' offseason. I'm honestly not entirely sure why they asked a Calgary guy like me instead of picking from the litany of Edmonton media available but I think it'll be a fun time. Hoping for a lighthearted back-and-forth with a bit of ribbing!

So, tune in here tomorrow morning at 9 if you want. https://www.sports1440.ca/ Fun fact. One of the hosts of the show I'm crashing guesting on is none other than former Flame Ladi Smid himself.

I have a question.

Do RFAs who are eligible for offer sheets have the same freedom that UFAs have when it comes to negotiating with other teams? Like could the Blues have approached the players back on July 1st and told them an offer sheet would be coming, or can the players agents go around to different team to solicit offers?

A lot of Oiler fans are saying that Holland/Jackson/Bowman slept on it for too long and didn't sign the players because of their own inactions. But is it possible that Broberg and Holloway knew offers would be coming in from St. Louis and therefore didn't want to negotiate anything lower than what they knew those offers would be?
