I can admit, i didn’t think this would ever happen.
But it does make me happy.

How did this thread get twisted into Gaudreau talk?
In this case the agent did the players right by getting them more money, and the players are smart enough to take it.
I'd love to see a picture of Kevin Lowe's living room after the Oilers found this out.
I remember when the Oilers signed the Penner sheet and had a special live air broadcast on 1260 before TSN had took it over expecting Anaheim to have a press conference. Instead they were awkwardly silent in saying nothing leaving Stauffer and the other hacks at the time to say...I think Penners an Oiler.
You know the Oilers will make a spectacle out of this whatever they opt to do. I guess if Dr. Drai and McJesus walk, Jake Neighbors might get a retaliatory 5 year 12 per year offer. Which would be outstanding.

They could actually move RNH and get something back in the trade.

I don't know what the going rate is right now given it's late August and it's not a great time to make a trade, but leaving it for the next real trading window (i.e. late in training camp) is a major risk and probably leads to a worse return simply due to teams knowing they have you by the balls.
But I generally agree with the nature of the trades you're suggesting. The benefit of the RNH move is that they actually HAVE to get something back here - either in the trade that gives them this cap space, or elsewhere. Because they won't have Kane and they'll need a couple of bodies after moving someone out.
I think the best option is probably to do the Ceci thing and hope you can land one of the players who inevitably gets traded in September when it becomes clear they're going to end up on waivers anyway.

Might've missed it and too lazy to go back, but Oil will have 7 days to match as of today, right?

I think it was obvious that the best they were going to get by a longshot was in Calgary, but they burned the bridge.
Then he wanted Philly who had no interest.
New Jersey was a good shot, but that offer was reneged.
Columbus was pretty literally the only chair left available when the music was about to stop.

Totally forgot he was there.
He got screwed by the return of the waiting in the shadows Lowe, who was pushed out when Chia and McLellan came on. The Koskinen mid season signing, which pissed off Talbot was blamed on (and meant to blame by the Oilers too) Chia, when it was Lowe all day, signifying his return to power.
When some of these guys retire out of hockey, the stories that they have and are fine with blabbing about about the Oilers behind the scenes going show will be pure gold.
But yes, no doubt Chia with a grin sticking it to the team that three him under the bus as they do any coach or executive the past 25+ years.

What’s the process for matching team in scenarios like this?
Obviously if they’re gonna match, they can do so anytime between now and the deadline to match.
But if they’re not, will they announce it and make it official? Or does the clock have to expire? Has a team ever come out on like day 2 and said take ‘em we’re not matching?

The last one I remember was Penner and Anaheim announced they are not matching.
I can't believe Burke was actually going to beat up Lowe lol.

The way I remember it, Anaheim didn't release it officially until some time after the deadline. I remember listening to the Edmonton radio that day and it was crickets. The gold came a bit later. "Given Kevin's recent performance we expect these to be great picks".

I was listening to Oilers Nation (for the salt) and they were talking about how they should trade Ceci to help with the cap crunch.
My only thought was "what draft pick(s) are you including for other teams to take him on?"
There's no "trade" to be made here right? It's like Monny and MTL, no?

I said all along that I thought this was a perfect situation for an offer sheet, and I am so glad that someone pulled the trigger. Wish it had been the Flames, but this is almost as good!
Watching the cracks forming all over the Oilers' cup window, while Oiler media and fans continue to believe that they are experiencing some sort of Goldilocks scenario, is just so, so enjoyable.

Believe that regardless of what you announce they'll be given the full week to match.
