False. They never offered him an extension because he told them he didn't want one. He did decide to leave. Where are you getting this from?

I mean I could see him leaving, but I could easily see him signing the biggest contract in NHL history next summer, too. Like are you saying you have sources that know he's leaving ,or you're just that confident on gut that he's leaving?
|
He will sign the largest contract in history. Just not with Edmonton.

Give Drai and McDavid 5M raises
Pay Bouchard 10M
Team will suck, they are doomed either way haha...todays news helps. Players arent just taking huge discounts as evidenced by the signings today

Oilers matching the forward and continuing to be dog #### on D would be hilarious and completely on brand.

But it wasn't.
Johnny didn't even take the pitch call. His agent did and essentially said we'll consider it but my client is interested in hearing offers on the market.
like 3 weeks before FA it was a 99% chance no. June 13th or 14th 2022.

What?
Hasn't even Craig Conroy said that on the Sunday before free agency that they thought Johnny was a done deal, and that he thought he would re-sign the whole time, and that he was shocked when he ended up leaving.
I don't think it was ever that clear that he was interested in hearing offers on the market in the middle of June.

I heard they gave the Flames a take it or leave it and the Flames called back to say done deal but the agent never answered the call.

So here's how I see things going (ha ha)
The Oilers have no choice, they have to keep these two, they're the only young talent they have, though they're not budget saving cheap, so they resign them.
They send their old faithful RNH to Kane's house, with a crow bar to Nancy Kerrigan Kane, to make sure he has a legit injury that can put him on long term injury. Of course the mistake was sending the softest human being on the planet to do it. Kane beats RNH within an inch of his life, and RNH ends up going on LTIR. Kane of course is still a cripple.
The Oilers trade CC, its tough because all of the other teams hate Bowman. He ends up sending CC to the Flames with 10 first round picks in exchange for a cat to be named later.
August 31st hits, Draisaitl's agent announces that they couldn't make a deal by the deadline and Drai doesn't want it to be a distraction. He says he's still interested in looking at signing with the Oilers but they won't talk until after the end of the season.
McDavid starts talking about his next contract. The locker room splits with McDrai on one side and their buddy Bouchard, and everyone else on the other side. Its the Millionaires club against the schlubs.
Draisaitl wants to drive up his value as does Bouchard. They both demand all the pp time and extra shifts.
Hyman starts showing his age, he's still good, but he's not GOOOOD.
Kane limps around the ice.
Skinner shows that he's not a regular season starter.
The Oilers limp out of the gate. A massive brawl erupts in the locker room.
New coach is fired for another new coach.
It doesn't help.
McDavid announces his intention not to sign a new contract.
The Oilers set a modern day record for lowest points and miss the playoffs by 80 points.
Canada rejoices.

That would be a surprise to me considering Lewis Gross sent out a preemptive tweet the night before free agency happened when there was still time for Gaudreau to sign.
I heard they gave the take it or leave it, the Flames took it, and then when it came time to actually sign the paper work that Gaudreau reneged on the deal and it surprised both Gross (who then sent out his tweet to try to calm things down) and the Flames (who were pissed off).

Not saying diss is making it up, btw, more just that I'm surprised at the assuredness of this happening two years out from multiple sources that haven't leaked anywhere else but through Diss.
|
To be fair to Dissentower, he said his sources were not hockey related. They could be family or friends of CM that have mentioned this in passing or to other friends.
Most "hockey world" people wouldn't post this stuff because of the source and the fact that they would then be putting their neck out there if this did or didnt happen.
I know friends / family of NHL players that have told me all sorts of stuff that a "hockey world" person wouldn't know or didnt bother to post.

Yeah, Gaudreau definitely rug pulled the Flames. I know someone who works on the media team and they were starting to get initial media pulled together on him re-signing.

I think the Gaudreau thing, and I hate re-hashing this, is the ultimate flub by both player and agent.
Gaudreau waffled, listened to his agent who was mistaken about the strength of the market and then it was just a calamity of errors.
And now I dont care anymore.

For McDavid I don't think anybody knows at this point.
I think he would love to play for the Leafs...but will Treliving actually be forward thinking enough to have the assets / cap space available to make it a reality...probably not.
It is interesting to me though that both Matthews and McDavid are represented by the same agent...I would bet that the agency would love to have McDavid and Matthews on the same team...and would have very good line of sight into how much more he can make from endorsements by being in Toronto instead of Edmonton.
The NHLPA is going to be putting huge pressure on McDavid and that agency to try to sign as close to a max deal as possible as well. He creates the ceiling for what star players can expect to make in the NHL.

Holland left because that was the plan all along. He did what he does best in the cap world and without the super scouts Detroit had, he left a pile of trash for the next man up, kind of hard to call Bowman a man.

I actually think it was mostly on Gaudreau. I think Gorss knew that would be the best he'd get by a longshot.

The market was soft for Johnny, his agent know it. They got the Flames to put up the most money and when Gaudreau dragged it along and said nope he found out. His hometown team didn't care to make room for him.
That's how he ended up in Columbus it was the best they could get. He couldn't even list a player on the team.
