Seems like a lazy writer. It wasn't so long ago that a precedent was set between these very two clubs as to how much cap space was worth. You can argue that Anderson is a bit better than Monahan was (at the time of the trade), but I wouldn't make that argument at all. 20 points last season, 32 before that, and the only time he has ever hit .5PPG was 6 seasons ago in Columbus.
I like big powerfowards, and I once liked Anderson, but he is a pure cap dump in my mind. 2 firsts is what I would want, and that's being generous given how much the Flames paid to unload Monahan.

Sean Farrell was a fantastic college player and had great chemistry with Coronato. No comment on this proposal, but would not have a problem acquiring Farrell

Hab fans rival Oiler fans in their extreme levels of delusion.
Their fans probably read the article and think it makes perfect sense.

And Monahan was only one year ... Anderson is three.

Yup. 2025 first back, in exchange for nothing, or no deal.

Yeah I can't see Montreal offering too much...because they have $7.9M of cap space with nobody left to sign...so not like they are in a place of desperation.
But if you're the Flames I have no idea how you're making that trade without your own 1st coming back.
And in terms of Pospisil there is no chance he's being moved. He's training with and mentoring one of our top prospects all offseason and is taking a big role in this team. No way you move him now.

Now Monny was coming back from quite an injury at the time and was not expected to produce at all. Now that turned out not to be the case.
But Anderson, whole healthy and productive to some extent, has 3 years of below production based on cap hit.
A 2025 1st would be the minimum I would expect. And I wouldn't take issue with anyone who wouldn't do that.

The conversation would be very straight forward with Montreal.
"I want my #1 pick back. And I want David god damn Putney - just because I feel like it!"

Yeah, the Monahan deal was borne of the desire to sign Kadri. There's nothing indicating Montreal is doing anything like that.

I’d be fine with Kotkaniemi, and over the moon with Luostarainen. They’re both centers, and both of them - especially Luostarainen - bring a lot more to the game besides scoring.

The inclusion of Pospisil in the deal is dumb. But Jordan Harris is more than a B prospect, and fits in the age range (24) and profile (good character, upside) that the Flames are looking for in the rebuild.

They are not in a position of desperation, no question.
However, they do feel that it is time for them to start being competitive. Removing Anderson's cap space would enable them to add another player that fits their plans.
Obviously, there would need to be a target reason for them to do this, but if they did have a target, it could make a great deal of sense for them.
But as others have said, if you want us to take Anderson off your hands, you give us the pick back.
And if you also want Pospisil, offer us something worthy in return.

In theory it makes sense for the Flames:
But the actual trade this guy is suggesting is just bad for the Flames:
To give up Pospisil and a 5th for Anderson, a mid round pick, and a couple of B prospects seems counter intuitive for what the Flames are trying to do.
|
So the Flames get a poor man’s Matthew Phillips in Farrell and a 4th line grinder and a 3rd and all they have to give up is Pospisil and a 5th? And they can get a 5.5 million dollar 4th line grinder who scored fewer points than Pospisil last year? What a deal.

Carolina should be paying us an asset to take on Kotkaniemi and you want gift them a highly skilled winger back in return? That would be just terrible asset management.

I could see Montreal trying to make a splash in free agency next year (Draisaitl for example). In that case, they would want to clear cap space. They could wait till next offseason to do that though.

Pospisil’s value extends much further than points, his advanced stats paint a picture of a guy who not only tilts the ice in our favour, but affects our win/loss record with his presence (at least in the first half before the firesale). He is by far the best player in that deal, and I would hope we get back more than a has-been and two small, vanilla prospects in return.

He was also fifth on the team in points/60. Ahead of: Sharangovich, Mangiapane, Lindholm, Huberdeau, Backlund.

I can't / won't argue any of the positives about Pospisil stated here. But he's on borrowed time so far as his NHL career goes. Its an awful thought or thing to say, but I believe its true.
If there is a deal on the table that requires the Flames to move him, depending on the return, you do it.

"Part of the package" are the key words. The rest better be several arms and several legs if we're taking 3 years of Anderson at 5.5M and giving up Pospisil, especially after what we gave up to get rid of Monahan.
