Big Oilers Lie: Edmonton Falsely Claims New GM Stan Bowman Was "Architect" Of Blackhawks Stanley Cup Teams
Quote:
Let's get one thing straight. Stan Bowman did not build the Chicago Blackhawks into a Stanley Cup winner as the team's general manager.
He was not "the architect of three Stanley Cup championship squads in Chicago (2010, 2013 and 2015)" as the Edmonton Oilers claimed on their website after announcing Bowman as their 11th general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations last Wednesday.
|
Quote:
If anything, Bowman slowly let the Blackhawks slide to the bottom of the NHL. Might the same thing happen with the Oilers, who came within one victory of the Cup last month?

In the city that built the Bibliotank, is calling someone an architect even a compliment?

Is he an offensive innovator? Not really, Does he make his linemates better, no, but his speed does open up lanes for other players, so maybe.
But what happens when he inevitably loses his half step, because in a 200 x 80 foot rink, a half step is a devastating difference in speed.
What if his speed becomes less ordinary? We know he's had hard miles, he plays more then half a game every game, he has to fight through a lot of physical play.
Is he that guy that at 30 suddenly drops from a 100 + point guy down to an ordinary 60 or 80 point guy? I'd vote yes, its what would scare the shyte out of me if I'm a GM signing him up to that league max 8 year contract in a couple of years.
The more I think about it, if the Oil don't win a cup next year, I might be tempted to quietly starting to explore the trade market before that fruit turns yellow.

The big debate is on.
How much of a discount is Draisaitl going to take, and McDavid and Bouchard going to take.
I'm seeing lowpoints of 11 million for Draisaitl, 13.5 for McDavid, and shockingly 10 million for Bouchard.
I don't think there's anyway that Draisaitl isn't pushing for the 14 million range. Its his last long term contract, and he already took a home discount last time around.
McDavid is getting whatever the league minimum will be, as the "best" player in the world heading into a long term deal that takes him to his mid 30's. With the tremendous pressure by his agent and the NHLPA is there any chance of a below 16 million dollar deal? Not a chance.
The only place that they're right is Bouchard. His agent is going to point at the nurse contract and yell "More".
We are heading to the end of august deadline for Draisaitl to get a deal done. New slimy GM Stan Bowman has his work cut out for him and knee pads to buy.

They're delusional if they think Draisaitl will sign for 11 million, even on an 8 year contract. Just look at some comparable 8 year contracts that were signed recently:
Pastrnak: $11.25M (13.64%)
Pettersson: $11.60M (13.89%)
Nylander: $11.50M (13.77%)
With the current cap, Draisaitl at 13.7% is $12.06M, at 13.9% is $12.23M. 12 million should be the lowest he takes, and 14 million shouldn't be surprising.

There's no way either of those guys takes a hometown discount on what will be their last big money contracts. Also, why would anyone in their right mind sign for another 8 years in Dumpsterville after already spending half their career there with nothing to show for it?? That just seems insane to me. One of them will be gone for sure, and I'm betting Drai will be the first to go.

It takes time. Bowman has only been on the job for a week or so and he's committed to doing a thorough, top-to-bottom review of everyone in the organization so he can determine what major and minor crimes and transgressions he's going to have to overlook and turn a blind-eye towards

McDavid’s cap hit/2 = Draisaitl and Bouchard’s raises.
They will not be able to sign Connor imo.

My guess the lowest possible amounts would be:
McDavid: $14M and up - he's going to be the highest paid player in the league, my guess is at least $14M. He's going to have a ton of pressure from the NHLPA to set the new market though. $18M is likely the max salary by the time he's eligible to re-sign and I'd be shocked if the NHLPA isn't pushing for him to get that amount.
Draisaitl: $12.6M to $13.25M - that would be the Mackinnon to Matthews range.
Bouchard: $9.5M to $10.5M - that's kind of the going rate for young top pairing d-men
So at the absolute lowest I think you'd possibly see for these 3 it's likely about $36M for the 3 of them.

I think McDavid is $16M at a minimum and Draisaitl is $13 at the very minimum. Mackinnon is underpaid and was in 2022 when he sign the deal. But he was motivated given the success of his team. Matthews signed his deal before his 69 goal season, coming off a very good but not top of the league 85 point year.

I have to think McDavid will eclipse the $15 million barrier. It would be a massive failure on him and his agent's part if he didn't get that because some teams will absolutely pay for it as he's going to bring fans into the building no matter what market.

He certainly makes Hyman better,.
He dragged a team to the SC final. He likely makes his team better than anyone else in the NHL.

He improves the scoring numbers of linemates. Does he contribute to better play by them, I wonder. There's a subtle difference.

I think they know McDavid is not coming back anyhow, they will try and overpay the other two to stay. Ken Holland doesn't leave the organization and extends his deal if he really thought the band was staying together given how close they came to winning it. He knew that there was a good chance Draisaitl was leaving and a certainty McDavid is. He was smart to avoid that inevitable #### show.

If the cap goes up 5% next year and McDavid signs an 8-year deal, the maximum cap hit will be $18.48 million.
His last contract was worth 15.72% of the cap when he signed it. Assuming a cap of $92.4 million, a similar percentage would be about $14.5 million. That should be the minimum he signs for on his next deal, but it will probably be over 15.

How many teams are going to have that much cap just laying around?
