As long as the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL, he need not worry. I'm sure there'd be an opening for him in that dumpster somewhere. Media relations perhaps.
Too soon?

Interviewer: do you support the Oilers?
Answer: duh! I worked for Sportsnet!
Interviewer: hired!

Lol! I will never forget the FA Cup where a smaller team had this huge fat guy as their backup goalie and they were taking bets on whether he'd eat a Meat-Pie on the bench.
Which he heard about and of course, brought a Meat-Pie and ate it on the bench.
He subsequently was fired for breaking betting regulations.
Betting regulations in Sport are in dire need of reform.

Nothing surprises me anymore but Marek seemed like a pretty straight lace guy. Unless legit information comes out indicating him of some unsavory act, I'm going to assume this was another Rogers cost cutting move.

Cost cutting in the sense that anyone who threatens their “legitimacy” with the gambling companies will be cut.

You don't actually believe this right? You think Marek goes silent for 3 weeks and nobody says a thing because he got fired for cost cutting measures? Come on.

I wasn't a big fan of Marek but him and Elliott made a good team. 32 Thoughts was entertaining. There were too many times Marek would make a comment and I would think man this guy is an idiot. To go along with another one's comments, not my type of Sushi.

He’ll have to find a new platform to promote green ice.

I just don’t believe this leak story. The guy is strait laced. He does seem to wish he was more connected/insiderish, but why would he pass info?
Simplest explanation is probably the best. Contract was likely up June 30. And he knew he wasn’t getting a renewal. He already conveyed he was taking red eye home after 1st round. His work was done.

It's almost like you badly want these rumors to be true. I suppose that's the times we live in right now where so many people are negative news junkies.

June 30 is the end of the NHL's fiscal year. The network rights deals expire/renew on that day too, so it wouldn't be outrageous for the contracts with the on-air people to be tied to that date.

Some contracts roll over, Marek may have been asked to work under the assumption he'd just re-up and instead he went home after giving notice. Who knows.
But after the thought was put in my head I'll bet he resurfaces with Amazon.

I think he already has! I think it was him that delivered the book that I ordered. I said hi to him and everything.

I'm fairly indifferent about the guy, but I do catch his show on the Fan from time to time. He's always seemed to me like one of those guys that's always trying for cred or clout of some sort. Like when he kept going on about how he's one of the awards voters, and even went so far as to read out his votes on the air (before any of the finalists or winners were announced). He read them out of order though, like he didn't identify which place he had each player in... just the 5 he picked for each award. Or like how every story of his has at least one name dropped that doesn't really matter to the story.
Anyway... I can kinda see a situation where maybe he's telling people stuff at the draft and he's completely unaware they're betting with that info. Like, he's just doing his typical "guess what I know..." stuff and this time it went south on him.

I have a friend who is a scout for an NHL team. A couple years ago he would text us who each team was picking about a minute before the pick was announced. I'm assuming the pick is registered and every team knows the pick a minute or so before it is announced. If I was sitting in my backyard watching and knew the pick before it was announced I'm sure Marek did too. I told my buddy to stop texting me because I didn't like knowing before it was announced, lol.

Who knows what happened - I doubt the leaking the story is correct unless it was happening days before. I'm also not sure about the people who have decided Marek is straight laced or whatever - he's an older career broadcaster. Those guys are all going to act straight laced when on air or meeting people in public. Unless you know the guy personally - we have no idea what the guy is like in private.
