Yeah, but it says a lot about your character that the first thing you thought of was "well this sucks, but redevelopment!". Again, pretty heartless, but glad you can think about a hypothetical that may never happen.

Lytton hasn't even started rebuilding and it's been 3 years (wow, time flies). As was pointed out above, it's going to be even more complicated to rebuild in Jasper since it's all National Park and leased land.

Don't know until asked. The "Calgary boy" stuff though. I'd say half the residents in Canmore are Calgarians. I also think they know the area better than we do.

I mean, is Fairmont even going to put effort in? The whole reason for the Lodge is the surroundings. Which are in ashes.

Yes, and I've determined over and over again that I'm right.

Don't want to derail this thread, though. We can bump a Canmore one if we feel like donning our battle gear. (I acknowledge I get to write a diatribe and now I'm trying to stop you from a rebuttal here - I apologize.)

This Jasper thing is unbelievable. We typically get out there every two years, but this year we were booked to camp third week of August at Whistlers, which would have been two years in a row. I've been enjoying Jasper and Waterton more and more as Banff and Lake Louise have become so busy over the last 10-15 years. To lose one of the major mountain towns in Alberta is devastating. You cannot persuade a rabidly vocal (and annoying) minority of people that we need to start building more recreation towns now so there will be the capacity for future generations to enjoy the mountains in the same way prior generations considered us. And now we just lost one of three or four mountain towns. What a nightmare.

The Calgary residents are the good ones. It's the "true Canmore residents" (in their minds) that spit the venom. There was garbage all around a community bin one day and as I was walking by some granola dip sht moronic lady was complaining to me that "it was probably someone from Calgary". They're all like this.

The Calgary folk on our street are awful… I think you are just projecting your own thoughts.

Terrible news about jasper. Though I didn’t get up that way as much as I would have liked over the years we did have plans in September this year unfortunately. My wife had never been. Really sad situation.

The Wildfire Paradox reappears. Many academic journals on the subject.

I don't mean this in a hand-wringing "development is good" sort of way at all, but Jasper is extrodinarily different from the other fire towns in that it's an obvious tourist destination. Whether that makes it feasable to rebuild or not I have zero idea. What was the figure on the other lost towns? 9 billion or something? I can't even fathom what Jasper would cost.

I wonder what that drive is going to look like once this fire is out. We make the trip to Jasper every few years and it's without doubt my favourite drive on the planet.
