Non-binding, sure. I can go to the library tomorrow morning and poll anybody who wants to participate on any topic, then report the results on here. They can do the same thing.
That seems to me what Obama was suggesting with his comments - "We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead. But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges."
Creating a process suggests - to me, anyway - involving the people. At the very least, our congressional representatives. Having it chosen for us is the most undemocratic thing possible. People will not take kindly to that. I don't know why there is such abject fear of an open convention.
