Good episode of Making Sense (Sam Harris) podcast out this week about how democracies fail through the corruption of their institutions: https://www.samharris.org/podcasts/m...mocracies-fail

I often find talking with Trump supporters or the Trump tolerant that they have little real understanding of the fabric that holds a functioning democracy together - things like the rule of law, public service, anti-corruption measures, customs/conventions, etc - or believe that these things are already broken and so nothing much will change if Trump wins. This podcast does a good job of exploring why that's not the case, why a democracy like the USA is not like a "democracy" that Russia has, and how the seams are already unraveling and would rapidly unravel with a second Trump term.

They aren't perfect candidates by any means, but the left had solid ones in both Bernie before and then Pete last time around. But people are right when they say that there's a significant enough spectrum of America who aren't ready for to support their fellow citizen who might need help because socialism or a President who happens to love someone of the same sex. It's really too bad, but Murica will get the President they deserve, which is Trump.

Replacing Biden would be a disaster for the democrats. There are reports saying if Biden is gone, Kamala could follow. Sounds like a disaster in the making, and no rumblings of who could potentially replace them. Democrats are currently in disorient.

Curious position.

How is it NOT a disaster for the Democrats if they maintain the status quo?

Biden staying is a zero chance of winning now. They can't possibly run a successful campaign when almost every democrat leader has said he's unfit.

Where are the reports saying Harris is gone? Nearly every article is saying the opoosite.

Maybe he means twitter reports? I dunno that came out of left field

Edit: like the literal opposite of what’s being reported. Donors are moving to Harris at breakneck speed.

The report I read was a statement from AOC, so perhaps there’s a bias there from her end, but I also tend to take statements from fellow Democrats seriously as they have a bit more information on the situation.

“If you think that is going to be an easy transition, I’m here to tell you that a huge amount of the donor class and these elites who are pushing for the president not to be the nominee also do not want to see the VP be the nominee,” she said.
Polling for Harris is just as bad, if not worse, than Biden.

Quote:
In a general election that also includes third-party candidates, Trump is leading Biden by one point in Michigan (45 percent to 44 percent) and four points in Pennsylvania (46 percent to 42 percent). Interestingly, Harris replacing Biden atop the ticket makes the Democrats’ chances worse in Michigan, with Trump leading her by five points (46 percent to 41 percent), and better in Pennsylvania, where she cuts Trump’s lead in half (45 percent to 43 percent percent).
Quote:
A YouGov poll (margin of error 3.1) conducted July 13 - 16 and released Thursday found Biden would lose to Trump 41% to 43%, while Harris would perform slightly worse, losing to Trump 39% to 44%.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted and released Tuesday—after the attempted assassination of Trump—found both Biden and Harris are virtually statistically tied with Trump, but 69% of respondents see Biden as too old to work in government (margin of error 3.1).

Democratic polling firm Bendixen & Amandi found Harris beating the former president 42% to 41% (margin of error 3.1) in a survey released July 9 and first obtained by Politico, while Biden, Whitmer and Newsom all trail Trump.
However, I do think Harris is the best option for the Democratsif Biden steps down, as it could allow retainment of incumbency votes. But replacing Biden makes me very uneasy.

But hey, if I’m wrong, that’s more than alright, too. haha.

Yeah, I've read some things saying that the higher ups in the Democratic party want to have a "mini primary," which would probably be pretty dumb. If they want to minimize drama, they should just go with Harris, make sure she picks a strong VP, and then hope for the best.

That said, I don't think there's any real incumbency benefit with Biden or Harris given that their approval ratings are in the 30s and they're facing a former President.

I wouldn't take anything that AOC says or believes as representative of the Democrats as a whole. She is so far off in her own little world.

So would Whitmer... I'm not sure there's anyone plausible other than Gavin Newsom.

Newsom isn't that plausible either, parachuting a "California elite" isn't gonna help in the rust belt. Dems have painted themselves into a pretty tough spot now. In some ways Harris is actually their best option, not because she's great or anything, but as the two things Trump hates the most, a woman and a minority, maybe he commits enough self-inflicted wounds to open a path.

Harris hasn’t had enough time in the spotlight to prove herself so I would take the polls with a grain of salt. As VP, sure, but as a presidential candidate people will pay much more attention. Expectations being very low, she might make gains if she is just ok. Not much of a hope, but a hope.

At this point anyone would be better than Biden. I actually think Harris would be fine. She's a smart lady, and it would be fun watching her destroy Trump in a debate.
