Lede
noun: lede; plural noun: ledes
the opening sentence or paragraph of a news article, summarizing the most important aspects of the story.
"the lede has been rewritten and the headline changed"

‘Lead’ is correct. ‘Lede’ is journalistic slang, and probably arose because lead (the metal) used to be used in the printing business.

VANs still strong, NAS has improved immensely, VGK is always a threat, DAL still has a great roster. The Oilers aren’t going to just cake walk to a Cup, despite what their fans and tire pumpers say.

Free agency "wins" rarely pan out how people think.
Look at how big of a deal Tavares to Toronto was made out to be, and how little it actually moved the needle in terms of their team success. The oilers adds are minor in comparison. I like Arvidsson though.
There were a few down years from teams in the west, including Vegas and Colorado. I expect that they'll be back with a vengeance. Nashville did improve up front which could make them a threat for a year or two. I don't have as much faith in VAN as others but they could come back with a strong follow up.
No matter how stacked a team looks a lot still has to go right and that's never guaranteed.

Yet another great reason to avoid the UFA trap. Sooner or later fans will come around to the fact that careers are 18-31 with the odd hall of famer like Kopitar or Crosby thrown in. Or a borderline one like Pavelski.
ELC, max term extension, trade in final year, let someone else fund the decline. Rinse and repeat.

Calgary will probably be finishing their rebuild as the power teams in the West like the Avs and LV and Dallas and Edmonton start to trigger their rebuilds, and the Canucks are in good shape for the torch passing ceremony.

The Tavares comparison isn’t even close. If you want to compare, you should look to last year’s signings by the Panthers. You know, the team that made it to the cup final the year before and lost. They picked up Rodriguez and Kulikov and became missing pieces to the puzzle. Tavares was plugged into a lineup expected to do all the heavy lifting. Arviddson and Skinner are much closer to the signings the panthers made a year ago than Johnathan Tavares.

The Panthers didn't have 14 free agents in their lineup, or a marginal starting goalie who just got hot at the right time, or an average age over 30, or one good D pairing plus a collection of garbage.
The last thing the Oilers needed was even more old forwards.

You’re probably right. The Oxford and merriam-Webster dictionaries are probably wrong.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/word...de-versus-lead
In journalism, the lede refers to the introductory section of a news story that is intended to entice the reader to read the full story. It appears most frequently in the idiom bury the lede.

The Oilers need better goaltending and better defense. But Arvidsson and Skinner are the missing pieces!

Yes, the introductory part of the story is the lead, because that's what you lead off with. One still says ‘lead paragraph’, ‘leading article’, ‘lead story’ (in a newscast), etc. The spelling ‘lede’ originated for technical reasons in newspaper work, and spread to other media as an affectation.
Cf. Oxford:
Quote:
1950s: alteration of lead 1, first used in instructions to printers, in order to distinguish the word from text to be printed.
|
The spelling ‘lede’ was not registered in dictionaries until 2008.
By the way, Oxford still regards ‘lede’ as an Americanism; and even in that particular usage, gives ‘lead’ as an alternate spelling.
Don't try to con an old linguist.
Edit to add:
This is from Merriam-Webster's in-depth article on lead/lede:
Quote:
Spelling the word as lede helped copyeditors, typesetters, and others in the business distinguish it from its homograph lead (pronounced \led\ ), which also happened to refer to the thin strip of metal separating lines of type (as in a Linotype machine). Since both uses were likely to come up frequently in a newspaper office, there was a benefit to spelling the two words distinctly.
|
The silly thing is that the spelling ‘lede’ only caught on when Linotypes were being replaced by phototypesetters, and lead (the metal) was no longer used in printing.
Harold Owens, after much research, observes:
Quote:
Some years ago, researching the evolution of “objective journalism,” I cracked open many of these old books, and something struck me — in none of these old books did any author spell the word “lede.” They all spell it “lead.”
It was then I realized, there is no historic basis for the spelling of a lead as “lede.” “Lede” is an invention of linotype romanticists, not something used in newsrooms of the linotype era.

They should be trading RNH for other pieces they need.

The Tenderness? Take away the powerplay and he's just a shadow in a rink.

And I suspect other GMs know that perfectly well.
Besides, RNH is no spring chicken anymore. He's 31 years old, under contract for five more years, and has a full NMC. Trading him isn't going to solve the Oilers' problems, even if he lets them do it.

It’s not about solving all their problems. It’s about solving any small part in exchange for a piece that doesn’t move the needle for them.
I think the key in the NHL is to move on from pieces like RNH (your 3-5th best player) sooner rather than later to keep the marginal assets from getting stale and losing all value.
I think they could get a value for value trade for RNH and get a piece they would actually benefit from.
Edit: case in point, we just got a second for mangiapane. They can do much better for RNH.

Mangiapane didn't have an NMC and wasn't under contract till age 36.
