I'm content with a lot of losing short-term if it truly kickstarts our franchise with some elite talent.

Todd Simpson was captain. Enough said.

Yup, Ben V said it best, it was worse with the Young Guns because it felt so hopeless. The Flames didn't have a chance at high priced free agents (without even more of an overpay). They were at such a talent deficit it never felt like the would make the playoffs. I don't think anyone thought they had a chance even at the start of the 2004 year. Sutter and Kipper turned things around.
2023 sucked pretty hard as well, but the Flames took a stab at resetting after Johnny/Chucky and it didn't work. I understood why they tried, but in the end it wasn't likely to work, and it didn't. The hard part is just starting now.

It was pretty grim. It was dim times for the Flames.

I'll take ya'lls word for it. That 2022-2023 season was definitely the most frustrating season I watched in my lifetime being a Flames fan

YG era was terrible. Clueless players running around, zero effort.

I think this team...
https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/...000432010.html
... was way more frustrating then that. Ever seen a GM lose all his marbles at once in real time? The Calgary Maple Rangers (and Friends) where your guess at the line-up is as good as mine (and the coaching staffs).

Fine with the trade as long it isn't some path to make a bunch of dumb free agent signings in the next little bit

and with expansion through the late 90s the Flames were bad but there were always teams destined to be worse so top picks never really materialized

this one would be up there
3 years removed from a Cup win (with a team that had almost no weaknesses and organizational depth to spare) they miss the playoffs and accelerate a downward spiral with a soul crushing trade
https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/...000431992.html
missed the playoffs! started the year with 5 Hall of Famers plus Roberts, Suter, Reichel, Fleury and Otto all under 30!

I think that team was the first one to lose to the expansion Sharks as well.

It was a frustrating season though, a 93 point team with .890 goaltending and 17 OT losses.
Definitely not Young Guns era bad though

Yea, that 22-23 season was the maximum level of frustration you could get from a 93 point team.
I said it at the time, will say it again, and will say it forever: that 22-23 Flames season needs a deep statistical dive at some point to show just how incredibly unlucky it was lol

Young guns was terrible, but in a quite different way. It felt a lot more hopeless than frustrating to me. Like no matter who the Flames developed, it didn't matter because they were just going to leave for more money. And it felt the Flames were going to leave soon too. Like the whole exercise was just buying lime to delay the inevitable.

Bump
Well now that his season is over, I don't think Mangiapane will ever see anything close to the 5.8 salary that the Flames gave him on his last deal. Getting a second round pick to get out of that contract looks to have been a pretty solid move. It opened up spots for younger players, who performed as well as Mangiapane may have in the role.
It will be interesting to see where he ends up this offseason. The league has money to spend, and the supply of players looking to take spenders money is not that deep. So I think he can still draw a pretty nice wage, but maybe 3 years at 3 and change per year? Hard to say if the Capitals will want him back as they did have a good year as a team, and he's likely still viewed as a decent third line option.
Hopefully the Flames have learned a lesson here, that moving on from these pricier vets who really are not producing what their contract is paying them and inserting younger players isn't so bad. If he's here all season does a guy like Coronato get back to the NHL as quickly as he did?

Which current contracts do you fit this bill and are movable, out of curiosity? I am not disputing your statement at all, just trying to determine who it applies to heading in to this off season
I feel like Huberdeau's is still un-movable. I feel like we're getting what we need from Backlund and Coleman at their rates, which is more than just box score stats. Weegar is delivering. Andersson's situation has been discussed to death.
Feels like based on this kind of criteria, players on notice should be Sharangovich, Farabee...and I'm not sure anyone else?
