There may be some optimism for the future but the future will still be 2-3 years away at minimum, this roster is shaping up to be almost as bad as San Jose was last year. I don't know if the average fan will shell out hundreds of dollars to watch a lottery team.

The only people shelling out were season ticket holders. I couldn’t give away tickets.

Those were my formative years as a hockey fan. The fact that I developed into a flames fan is a minor miracle. Grim times.

And why would someone be a season ticket holder with these tickets prices? If you can't give tickets away, what is the draw for the average fan?

Me too. Going to school as a Flames fan when all your buddies are Wings, Avs and Devils fans sucked a lot lol

I was born in Calgary but grew up in Ontario in a family of Leaf fans. Honestly have no idea how how I avoided becoming a Leaf fan. Just a stubborn kid I guess lol.

Hopefully, this rebuild bears fruit. Anyone born in the mid 80s missed the glory years, suffered through the Cup team tear down and young guns, and then have seen very little success outside of 04. Kind of feel like we're due for an era of actual sustained success.... right?!

What’s your argument, they shouldn’t rebuild? The faster path to getting the average fan back is a good team. They’ll lose season ticket holders for sure but that was going to happen either way.

Why does it matter? The vast majority of the high priced season tickets are owned by corporations and they will retain them regardless. Then there are a chunk of them owned by hardcore fans that will stick through the rebuild, and even be excited to watch the young guys play and grow. Sure there will be a few thousand empty seats most games, but what does it matter? The ownership group already includes two billionaires who don't need any more money, and they're also getting a billion dollar stadium upgrade for close to free. So who cares if they lose a few million on unsold seats. They're unlikely to be spending to the cap anyway, so they might actually make more money in the next few years despite the empty seats.

If they were really smart, they'd give away the seats in the entire upper loge to school kids and try to get some new Flames fans in place to buy tickets in the future when the team might actually be good.

Kudos to Conroy for getting these deals done. Was pretty sick and tired of the Sutter and Treliving eras of our management teams sitting on their hands and dragging out the process. We waited too long to make moves in the past, sometimes even went down with the ship and got nothing from expiring assets. Even if the all the moves don't pan out we should trust that Conroy is putting in the work and taking action.

Sutter came off as a curmudgeon. Treliving was always making calls... but it appears sometimes well past the deadline.

Feaster was just a total disaster. He should be running a car wash, not a professional sports team. Nice guy, just not fit for management.

Seeing the Flames making these moves makes me more likely to go to games, not less.

Well it's easy to pile on Treliving and Sutter as GM's, but to be fair they were trying to build a winner.

Right now Conroy is just in demolition phase. We have yet to see how he will go about building a winning team yet.

Maybe he will be patient and let all these draft picks get used and allow the players to develop. Time will tell.

I think this could be a "retool" in the sense that the rebuild doesn't last as long as people think it will. A lot of things would have to go right for that to happen, and the Flames are actually set up for that to happen. The flames have a high end goalie prospect and lots of depth prospects, if they draft high end talent in the next 3 drafts and 1-2 of the existing prospects takes a big step forward, they could be competing in few years... Or these things might not go right and it could take much longer.

Anyways, call it what you want, retool or rebuild. This team will be awful for at least two seasons, probably longer.

I appreciated Mangi. His story and his play on the ice. I feel like he just Didn’t have a good fit to play higher in the line up. He was a fearless competitor at times. I think he had a shoulder issue the last couple of seasons that Didn’t really clear up. It probably contributed to his struggles. He was a solid possession guy but he did have trouble with bigger defenders and forwards who really were able to neutralize him due to his size. He’s a great complimentary scorer on a deep team with a legit top line. Perhaps since he’s going into his last chance for a big contract we see a big uptick?

Anyway the trade looks good. It’s testament to Connie’s plan. I am really impressed with him so far. Has a first year GM ever had to facilitate so much change ? He’s done great. I think he really understands what wins in this league and he’s committed to this vision.

We had a log jam of wingers and now Pelletier gets his chance. We can’t risk losing him to waivers. So this trade is all types of awesome: roster spot, cap space and a late second. Really solid deal.

I think Rasmus is in line for a similar transistion this season, the trade deadline or next season.

Anyway , I loved watching mangi compete at times. He really punched above his weight class with his grit and abilities. He had some beauty shots for this team and was a classy guy. Thanks for the memories and good luck next year. Hopefully he’s able to furnish a good season and secure a lucrative contract for him and his family.

GFG

Let’s win a lottery in the next couple years and bless the new barn with a high octane team.

That isn't the argument, I think that it is a good move hockey wise while still being a hard sell for casual fans and for those people who are saying that there is now hope for the future, that may be true in the long run, but short term will be a lot of empty seats.

They need to make it entertaining. Inject youth who play with energy, more Zary, Pospisil, Coronato, Pelletier, Klapka, maybe Poirier.

Get some tough guys. Flames fans love tough hockey. If you can’t beat them on the scoreboard, don’t let them have an easy night. Youthful physical hockey will sell in this market.
