Probably to protect Wilson from Panarin.

FLA Hubby or Flames Hubby?

I feel like if the Flames were a good team, they would pay to unload this Mangiapane deal, so getting a pick back is awesome

I understand it's a good trade but I'm still sad to see Bread Kid go.

I won’t be surprised if Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, Kadri, Pospisil and/or Coleman are gone soon too

I hate to be a downer, but I think their forward depth is a little bit more like this, if you squint really hard you could see Huberdeau regaining top tier status, or one of the young guys making the jump, but realistically, you need at least 2 top 3 forwards added to this roster to be truly competitive, and you probably still need to shed two more bodies from the middle 6 (which is the real reason this Mangiapane trade doesn't really hurt, because you still have 2-3 bodies that fit perfectly into his roster spot)

Conroy is doing exactly what this team needed. Outside of the Honzek pick I can't think of a single quibble.
And I hope I'm proven wrong on that one too.

Something I feel more confident in Conroy in than Tre, is that say they have a surprise year and sneak into the playoffs early in the rebuild, I don’t think Conny will switch from seller to buyer so quickly. No 1st or 2nd round picks should be going out until the team is a consistent, deep playoff threat. 2014/15 really set the organization back long term.

Don't hate Mang as much as apparently some people seem to.
But this is a good deal, especially with no retention

One step closer to people admitting this is a rebuild.

That was basically one or two people though.

There were quite a few even after the trade deadline. I think we're down to those couple of diehards now.

Yeah, even the Markstrom trade didn’t quite get people there because Conroy mentioned playoffs

Usually at first glance the Conroy trades make you feel like you want more but in this case I think it was a great move. Clearing the cap space and getting a 2nd I think it works well. I am interested to see what the Flames do with the picks and cap space

why does anyone care what this part of the Flames' evolution is? rebuild, retool, chase playoffs - whatever.
like this trade even though i liked Mang a lot...helps the team get closer to their future state - whatever that may be.

Good trade. Mangiapane was great here, ever since he came up as a part of the Ryan - Hathaway line. Loved watching him hound pucks, and win puck battles more often than not. He was a great fit on the Backlund line, but unfortunately we couldn't drive his own line, so things got a bit stale.
A 2nd is a very good return. I thought we'd have to retain to get a 2nd. The cap space, the retention slot, and the roster space in the top 9 are all assets we got today.

Just to pick on you because you posted but I think the other trades are an expectation versus reality thing. Which one was disappointing in hindsight?

Seven significant trades for Conroy, in about one year. The aggregate returns are:
1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, Sharangovich, Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz, Jurmo, Grushnikov, Miromanov, Bahl, and more than $20M in cap space
Do not under-estimate the value of that last item

I imagine Washington will try to trade him at the deadline in hopes for a higher pick, especially if Eat Bread finds his game.
