Moves GM's make when they're more focused on quality vs quantity which can be cliché as its used often, but I hope the Flames do something similar to move up from 28 even if its to 20.
Yea he could wait and see how many off the board picks are made, but he's trusting his scouts and likely focused on a certain tier of players they believe to be available and likely one they really want.
I find moves like this show you a GM isn't scared to trust his scouts or make a bold move. Things I wish the Flames did in years past and what Craig can hopefully do to weaponize our CAP space.
Look at their cupboard of prospects coming up here, yea they've sucked but they knew they were going to and instead of trying to salvage it and "compete" they tore it down hoping to rebuild with top tier assets, and its coming.
Celebrini
Will Smith
Musty
Eklund
Bystedt
Edstrom
Luca Cagnoni looks promising on the defensive side.

AH I dunno man, I've been playing this "Look at this list of our awesome prospects" game with Buffalo for a decade and we still suck. I won't call any GM a genius until the product actually succeeds.

Same. I don't think there's enough of a talent gap between 20 and 28 to burn a high 2nd round pick.

Who called him a genius?
There’s no denying their prospects aren’t good, I think they were rated 3 or 4th before this years picks… I’d say they jump to 1.
Buffalo sadly messed it up, not all teams do.
If SJS starts selling half their list like Buffalo did then maybe you can compare it.

You did.
Well, you said 'Grier is very smart' -- which I guess is shy of calling him a genius, but in the same wheelhouse.

Smart = genius? That’s a new one…. Little overzealous I’d say.
Genius would insinuate he’s the smartest man in hockey, and I definitely didn’t say that.
Grasping at straws.

On TSN LeBrun says the Flyers made an aggressive pitch for BJ's 4th OA offering 12th OA, a roster player, and next year's first.
The BJs said no.

Agreed, but you don’t win the hockey lottery without some elite tickets.
Nothing is guaranteed, but it’s better than having no elite lottery tickets.
That’s where Calgary currently stands.

I’d happily see the Flames move 41st or the DAL pick (or maybe both?) to jump from 28th to 10-14 range. Could potentially bring in Yakemchuk, Helenius, etc.

Stian Solberg is another guy that could be worth jumping up for in the 14-18 range

Most of your team's "new core" is 24 and under.
Dahlin
Power
Byram
Samuelsson
Benson
Cozens
Peterka
Savoie
This is most of your defence + you don't really have a strong bottom 6. Have to give it time. These players are going to be awesome.

sure but I think his point might be the last time the Sabres made the playoffs (and I say this respectfully as a Sabres fan since 1976) the Flames hadn't even drafted Johnny Gaudreau yet

That's a separate case of mismanagement. The fact that the Sabres couldn't turn around the Eichel pick and use that as a launchpad was a travesty. Look at what even the Oilers managed to do with McDingus and Leafs with Matthews.

That’s his point, though.
Nice to have an awesome list of prospects… but that doesn’t mean you’ll actually do anything with them, so no sense in calling a GM a genius until he actually turns them into something worthwhile.

Actually his point seemed to be SJ management can't be called smart because Buffalo also had good prospects and it didn't work out (yet).
It's a very odd point.

San Jose has had pretty solid drafting all down the line. Not sure who remains there from previous regimes, but if it is long term guys pushing for the 11th, they have earned the benefit of the doubt.
