I do feel like trading Weegar would indicate 5+ years of pain

I'd definitely rather keep Weegar than Rasmus, I think he brings more continuous work ethic to the table and that rubs off on young players.
But if you offer Rasmus in this same move and they push for Weegar, I don't think you walk away, and maybe you actually improve the return.
In the end, neither guy's here anyway when the new "core" (TBD who that includes) is fully getting their legs under them & leading this team.
For all we know if this team's awful next season all of the vets could be asking for trades anyway.

Definitely, really, very much not a rebuild. I’m so mad they’re retooling! We’ll never win trading established players for top ten picks in a retool!!
|
They tried to extend the bulk of those players and only traded them when that wasn't an option. I appreciate that is splitting hairs. They are rebuilding regardless of whether is is forced or by design. But it does speak to the organizations appetite to embrace the rebuild versus try and rush their way out of it.

For what it’s worth, from what I’ve heard
Weegar agent wants him to go back to Ottawa
Weegar wants to stay in Calgary. Not sure why his agent is pushing it so much, but nice to see Mack wants to make it work here.

I think you have to keep Anderrsson over Weeger. Same offensive production, probably not as good defensively but almost 3 years younger. 2 years left on a good contract.

How can Weegar go back to Ottawa? He never played there.

why would an agent have any influence on this?

That seems closer to the mark to me. Ottawa stays in the 1st round which I’m sure they’d prefer, they save cap, and bring a local guy home who fits very well into their li up and fits a ‘get better now’ approach. If the Flames have to add a mid round pick to get it done, I’d do that as well. Besides it’s likely they’ll have a few more to gain in other moves at some point.

100%. Weegar’s contract is already aging very well and will always age well. By the time he’s on the last couple years of his contract he’s likely taken a step down, but with the cap likely to go up his cap hit would still be good for a top 4 D, even if he’s a middle pairing guy. And, much like Tanev, he makes whoever is paired with him a better player.
Don’t know if I can say the same for Anderson. I’d also argue Andersson could likely fetch more based on age and cap hit.

Isn't his agent his uncle or something?
Also agents are advocates for their clients so maybe it's just that the agent sees the writing on the wall with respect to Calgary's current trajectory and knows that Ottawa would love to get their hands on him (which we've heard for over a year now) and thinks it would be a more competitive/better situation in the short/medium term.

Yeah forsure I don't think any flames are must keeps. All I'm saying is if given a choice I'd trade rasmus first.
I would trade weegar too if ottawa wanted him more.

From the point of view of teams with the window open now, a guy with experience, two-way with actual scoring ability, likeable and plays a heavier north south game would be of value in playoffs.
And he's only played 540 NHL games despite being 32. It's not the years....it's the mileage!

Maybe since he's a hometown boy, he'd have lots of sponsorships lined up with the Ottawa equivalent of Hopestreet dot CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

That's literally their job lol. Trying to put their player in the best possible scenario to get paid.
Agent probably sees what everyone else can see. Ottawa is an up and coming team with solid pieces and calgary is rebuilding.

Honestly... would rather trade Andersson than Weegar. Weegs' attitude, effort and leadership is terrific for this team. The icing on the cake is that he WANTS to be here.

There is nothing off the table for me to get another top 10 pick. If it’s Weegar, it’s not ideal, but I’d do it.
It also cements the flames a bottom 5 finish the next two drafts. Gets them two huge pieces this draft in the top 10. With two top ten picks this draft, a top 5-10 pick in each of the next two drafts, plus the Vegas and NJ pick lottery tickets? That’s about as much as you could dream about for draft capital to kick off this rebuild.

Vladar is tank commander, no need to trade Weegs. He’s a leader on this team.

Interesting. Isn’t his agent his uncle or cousin?
There were rumours back in Weegar’s first year here that Ottawa was interested. Believe Garrioch wrote about it. Take it with a grain of salt. Not too sure how reliable he is.
