Marner is saying he wants to stay, and that is probably true but I wouldn’t take that as gospel and he’s going to shut down each and every trade that comes his way.
If the Leafs come to him, if they haven’t already and say ‘we would like to move you’ to what end would Marner want to stay?
You’re right, he does hold all the cards so he could very well say here’s X number of teams I’ll consider. He could also say ‘and it will have to happen before July 1’. Just my opinion but I believe Markstrom probably said similar things to Conroy.

Detroit moving Walman for nothing has to mean they are looking for a dman.
Also Flames should have been all over that.

The point I’m continuing to make is the Flames would then move Marner for futures in a 3-way trade.

I would take it is gospel, he absolutely loves Toronto. The Markstrom situation was different, that is a player that is older and his team was going toward a rebuild. Marner grew up a Leafs fan in the Toronto area and has no motivation to leave there. What you are hearing is some of the Toronto media wishing he would move so they can address other needs, everything I have heard contradicts that is what will happen. Even if the Leafs tell him they would like to move him he says not interested.

Nah, I think Bonded has it right... he seems more like a Ferland to me. Which is to say optimally a 3rd line 20-20 fan favorite winger. Valuable at the right price but not untouchable by any means. I think he's playing a bit higher then he should be right now but right now doesn't really matter.

Sure. It’s known Marner loves Toronto. But again, if the Leafs come to him and say, one way or the other, trade or letting him walk, they’re moving on, wouldn’t any rational person consider their options?
Marner sure didn’t do the Leafs any favours during his last contract negotiation, so why would the Leafs feel compelled to put him in the best spot to succeed? I suspect Craig Berube could make Marner feel pretty uncomfortable.

No he can't. What can he do? Can't cut his ice time or you cripple the team and you are upsetting their other stars that like Mitch. Why would he accept a trade when he can put the pressure on Toronto to sign him or he gets to go to UFA where he will get more money than a sign and trade and his choice of any team he wants? He knows he has a GM that still has PTSD from letting Gaudreau walk for nothing in his last job. He can pretty much force the Leafs to keep him if he wants to stay.

If that’s the precedent you want to set with your stars that’s your prerogative but trying to punish a player in the last year of their deal would be pretty stupid as a coaching staff and organization. They gave him the contract and if you get Kylian Mbappe’d that’s what you get. An NMC walking someone to UFA can bite you as Treliving is well aware

A Marner 3 team deal:
Leafs get Kadri and Anderson, Calgary gets Marner. At this point, Marner's agent has already spoken to all 3 teams involved. Calgary then trades Marner to new team with an already agreed upon extension in place. Calgary gets a high draft pick, good young player/prospect, and a cap dump.
The reason it works is because Toronto wants Kadri and Anderson specifically because when Treliving falls in love with a player, he gets tunnel vision. Calgary has no need for Marner so flips him to a team he wants to go to. New tea. Pays for Marner and for the Flames to take a cap dump.
Not saying it will happen, just how it COULD happen.

Oooff don’t know about that.
PLD loves Montreal, Gaudreau loves Philadelphia, Tkachuk loves St. Louis. Just cause a player loves a city doesn’t mean it’s a match made in heaven.
The Leafs could very well say, beat it. They’ll take the $10-12M in savings and throw it at McDavid in a couple years or Draisatl next. I’m sure the Leafs will find good use of the money.

None of those players you mentioned were under contract at any time to those teams though with a NMC. You are right, the Leafs can let him walk but if I am Marner I take that chance over accepting a trade because the two best outcomes are the Leafs retain me or I cash in as a UFA. There is no good reason for Mitch Marner to do the Leafs a favour by accepting a trade.

I think we could get a high draft pick and a good young player/prospect for 2 years of Andersson straight up.
So would you trade Kadri's contract for nothing? Maybe, I guess it's close. I think someone would offer something if it was a place Kadri would waive for.

There is zero chance Conroy trades either Andersson or Kadri for futures at this point based on the "keep trying to win" mentality".

I think Andersson is a possibility for sure. I think he is walking the edge here between complete rebuild and retool to try and placate ownership. Kadri isn't going anywhere, likes the team, moved his family to Calgary, had won a Cup already, and had a NMC.

The number of teams that have a high draft pick, and also should want Marner, and would also not have the types of players (or not be willing to part with them) that TO would want, and that Marner would be willing to sign an extension with has to be pretty small.
Like... maybe Utah if the new owner really wants to make a big splash and Marner is good with going there... and that's about it.

My take on the “keep trying to win” is that it’s lip service to the fans and players. They don’t want to lose the mentality of working as hard as they can, but this team is completely gutted at the moment. In the last calendar year we’ve already shipped out our:
Starting goalie (Markstrom)
2x top 4 dmen (Hanifin and Tanev)
Bottom pair dman (Zadorov)
2x top 6 forwards (Lindholm and Toffoli)
That’s a lot of talent out for what we brought in roster wise. This is a rebuild but the flames don’t want to use that dirty r word.

I don't buy the "lip service to the fans" argument though. Wouldn't take much to come to the conclusion that the fans are interested in a rebuild and its ownership that doesn't want it. I can buy lip service to the players, although they aren't stupid either... they see the moves and can see the roster isn't doing anything exciting.
