The Oilers have already paid Brown that $3 million. Since they didn't have any cap room left for bonuses, they get it deducted from next year's cap.
So they go from a team that's allowed to be $3 million over the cap, to a team that has to stay $3 million under. And all this on a team with 10 UFAs, only 14 roster players under contract for next year, and missing almost a full rack of picks in the next two drafts.
They're screwed.

Should rename the award to Connor McSmythe when you don't win the cup.

All the talk in the media after game 3 was getting Connor the Conn Smythe. Another few games and getting the assist record win or lose the trophy is his. So he locked it up in games 4 and 5, and got the most important trophy to him.
What a leader. Let's go.

They're still a team that knows how to lose.

His 11 points in the finals would have been a lot better if it was spread out.
That's the problem with just looking at raw points. So what if he racked up a bunch of points in a game 4 that that was already over, and the Panthers had stopped trying?
Here's his 11 finals points:
1 - Game 2 - Game opening goal - Assist - Oilers Lose
2- Game 3 - Assist on 4-2 goal in third period - Panthers bending but not breaking
3 - Game 3 - Assist on 4-3 goal in third period - panthers bending but not breaking
4 through 7 - Game 4 - points on 4-1, 5-1, 6-1, and 7-1 goals. All points in a game that was already basically over, except for maybe the first point.
8 through 10 - Game 5 - points on 2-0, 3-0, and 4-1 goals - Actually 3 of the 5 of so points that really mattered.
11- EN goal in final seconds.
So, out of 11 points, 5 at most really mattered in the game.

Good morning! I was trying to find words to express how today is to me. I looked for lyrics from songs, originally thinking about U2's "Beautiful Day" but I stumbled upon Michael Buble's - It's a Beautiful Day and I wanted to share this with you all:
It's a beautiful day and I can't stop myself from smilin'
If we're drinkin', then I'm buyin'
And I know there's no denyin'
It's a beautiful day, the sun is up, the music's playin'
And even if it started rainin'
You wouldn't hear this boy complainin'
'Cause I'm really glad that the Oilers lost
It's a beautiful day
(apologies for putting on my Ron Maclean hat)

It's not his fault a bunch of Canadian hockey writer dorks voted him the winner as a consolation prize that no real competitor in their right mind would ever want to accept, let alone make a big deal of. One of many reasons you shouldnt give MVP to a player on the losing team.

No, it isn't his fault they voted him the winner.
But that is not at all the point. He makes $12.5M per year, because he is the captain of a professional sports team. Why do athletes make that much money? Because fans pay a ####-ton for seats, merchandise, and concessions, and because broadcasters pay a giant ####-ton to air games for fans to watch. He also makes millions in endorsements, because he is the face of the league. Thousands of Oiler fans flew to FLA to watch that game in person.
He absolutely should have made an appearance to accept the trophy that was awarded to him BECAUSE IT'S HIS ####ING JOB! With greatness comes great responsibility - if it's too hard for him to skate out onto the ice, stand beside Bettman for 10 seconds to shake his hand and take some pictures, then I would say he is not worthy of the greatness bestowed upon him by his fans.

The look on all their faces was sheer disappointment, but the dad especially was hurt you could see it.
Sad, just that much ego and you go and ruin a moment for your family who you know are in attendance.

I posted this earlier, but it's pretty funny. The camera pans around the crowd to Oilers fans and his parents. They are so happy and thrilled to see him come out for the award. Watching their faces change to confusion and then disappointment is hilarious.

Well that was part of their problem too....there should have been 5 on the puck and one in front at that point.

SOOOO after everything is said and done wasn't it way better for the Oilers to lose in Game 7 of the Cup finals than getting bounced in the 1st round? LOL!!
It would have taken alot of butt clenching but losing in OT would have been even better!

When Florida comes to Calgary next season they get a lengthy standing ovation, right?

Scoring Winger

I’m reminded about the discussion as to why it is so hard to come back from 0-3 in series. You can’t have one bad game or the other team gets four chances to make adjustments. The stats are the way they are because it’s hard to win four in a row in the playoffs especially down.
