$10 million in cap space with only 14 players on the roster. Ten UFAs. Holloway and Broberg need new contracts. No prospects to speak of, and they have traded away seven picks in the next two drafts, so they're in no position to dump cap by offering sweeteners. And more than half their returning players are over 30.
They could open up some cap space this year by buying out Campbell. The cap hit for that buyout is only $1.1 million for '24-25. But it goes up to 2.3, then 2.6, in the two years when they'll need every penny to re-sign Draisaitl and McDavid.
Just when they finally got useful players in the bottom half of the roster, they're going to have to let most of them walk and replace them with whatever free agents are willing to sign cheap contracts.
Running it back is not going to be an option.

Not sure what it’s right. Sucking it up, or maybe that is too much trauma for people these days

Nope. Listen to Connor Bedard after the U18 (I think) All class and would only talk about his teammates. ###### knows no generational boundaries. Do we even need to mention Trump and his maga followers?

The sun is shining a little brighter today, the songs of the birds a little cheerier. All of the Calgarians who debased themselves by cheering for the Oilers should have to go a week without showering. Conserve some water and can smell like the city they embarrassed themselves for.

Watching CBC News and I see Chris Pronger being interviewed. Remembering what he did after the Grease's last run to the final, I'm wondering who's gonna make the first trade request now?

I will say, as someone who's married to a high school teacher (and my job also revolves around education, just for more mature learners), that while I agree that McDavid not coming out to accept the Smythe is not a "generational thing", there most certainly are generational behavioural trends for Gen Z (which McDavid is) and Gen Alpha that are concerning that are becoming more and more frequent. Entitlement and the whole "I don't have to do this if I don't want to" attitude being one of them.
So yes, I wouldn't blame McDavid no-showing his own award on it being a generational thing and would point the blame at him, I wouldn't fully discount it playing a role either as behaviour like this does seem to be more common amongst people his age and younger compared to older generations.
As the apparent face of the league, though, no excuses for him.

Oh, somewhere in this favoured land the sun is shining bright,
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light;
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout,
But there is no joy in Mudville—mighty Casey has struck out.

And Bouchard and Drai come up first.
There is a smart thing to do this offseason, which they won't do. Trade Draisaitl.
Basically, they could attempt one more run at the cup next year (with a worse roster than this year - due to cap restraints), and then be absolutely terrible for a while, OR, they can shift gears a bit, maybe be decent most years, but never really good, for quite a while.
Those are the only two options.
|
The only sane thing to do is a sign and trade of pissy to maximize value, load up and start over. Pray McSmythe stays, which would totally bankrupt them or do it again the next year. They could be competitive again right away if they did right.
Narrator: They won't.

Have you looked at their cap? They have $10M of space. They have 7 forwards under contract. 5 defencemen, and Campbell/Rodrigue are currently their backup goalie options under contract. Looks cap constrained to me.

Plus they will have to have Draisaitl extended at the TDL or trade him as a rental. He's expiring and has a 10 team list. Or they let him walk at the end of the year. So do they hand him the vault combination at, say, $15M or trade him?

I'm not worried at all. Making back-to-back trips to the finals is extremely rare in today's NHL, and I highly doubt the western conference bracket is gonna line up perfectly for them again like it did this year. This was very likely their last real shot. Absolutely everything went their way this year, including having the refs in their back pocket the entire season and a historically good PK in the playoffs. And in the end they still couldn't finish the job.

Huh? They only have a handful of forwards signed and next to no cap room ~$10M to play with. They are knee deep in it with no draft capital either.

Even if he isn't extended I doubt they trade him, they'll have to walk him to free agency.
Well, unless of course they are out of the playoff picture but I don't see that happening with McDavid/Draisaitl/Hyman/RNH/Kane/Bouchard/Ekholm/Skinner still there
