Spain have won group B. Italy need a win or draw. Albania and Croatia’s paths are core complicated but they both need a win with some caveats.

Honestly I hate this whole third place team thing.

Either just add 8 more teams and do 8 groups instead of 6.

Or keep the 24 teams and do 8 groups of 3 or something and only take the group winners.

They will get to 32 before too long. No way they can do 8 groups of 3. Groups of 3 suck and that's only a 30 game tournament instead of 52.

They tried it once in 1982, six groups of 4 (top 2), then 4 groups of 3 (group winners), semifinals and final. Ended up with the famous group of Brazil, Argentina and Italy, i'm sure you recall!

Also, people love knockout football.

I really felt that expanding the tournament would water it down to nonsense, but some of the Minnow teams are changing my mind, Albania in particular.

Hell...how did Scotland even qualify? Worst team at this Euros so far and its not even close.

Agreed on the 3rd place thing. It punishes good groups and benefits weaker groups. It’s dumb.

Tournaments don't want big teams going out, 3rd place is a safety net. And they want more randomness of knockout football, and big teams meeting each other early.

The World Cup used this system 3 times, 86, 90, and 94. In 86, 3rd placed Belgium made the semis and in 90 and 94, 3rd placed Argentina and Italy made the final respectively.

The Euros have used this system now twice. 2016, 3rd placed Portugal won it all. In 2020, 3 of the 4 beat Group winners but all lost their next match.

this tournament mode is so stupid. I just checked the live table, saw Italy in third place with 3 points and -1 GD and thought to myself "yeah, that'll probably be enough". So dumb.

They had an xG of 0.04 prior to the penalty, they were ass for most of this game and haven't been particularly good in either of the other two games. Not a huge fan of them progressing and trying to defend their way to a win, but that's just me (and most people to be fair).

Hungary is -3 and if the Czechs beat the Turks, the Turks would be -3.

Yeah this format really sucks, Italy are probably better off taking this 1-0 loss than trying to tie and risk losing 2-0, which would probably knock them out.
