It's not weight, it's volume. Wolf probably takes up less space in the net than any other in the NHL. More space equals more open net that Wolf has to move to cover up. Shooters are many levels more precise in the NHL than they are in lower leagues. It isn't all that complex.

Then if we draft a guy like Perekh - Elite numbers, solid outlet passing, defensively relatively sound. Then that's your A/A+, Brz is your B/B+ and Poirier is your C. Truth is, Poirier is still a bit of a mess in his own zone and would be a bit of a longshot to having a lengthy top-4 career.
|
So I had a long reply ready talking about production of defenders in junior and comparing Poirier and Morin's draft years... and then CP logged me out when I tried to post it. So here's the gist:
Lots of people were saying Morin was a better prospect than Poirier because he put up better numbers at the same age. I found the raw totals were slightly misleading because Morin was Moncton's only offensive threat on the back end, and Poirier had to compete for offensive deployments on a bad team that nevertheless had multiple other offensive defenders with whom to compete for deployments. Poirier scored an unusually high percentage of even strength and primary points, doing so at rates higher than a lot of forwards (his "offensive involvement", as I put it, was actually more impressive than Connor Zary's from his draft year, as an example).
I went on to suppose that Brzustewicz was likely more similar to Morin in this way than Poirier, though I noticed that he only had 24 PP points this past season. I also clarified that scoring a lot of powerplay and secondary points isn't a red flag against defenders, I just wanted to illustrate how unusual Poirier was as a prospect.

If Wolf doesn't pan out, I'll take the blame. I took a risk and got my Blasty crested last season with his name.

And if you look at pictures of wolf he’s got a long neck which adds to his height. I really hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see how he’s going to be a great goalie in the NHL.

What part of 'Darkest Timeline' has eluded you?? We shouldn't be doing ANYTHING but hoping for Florida.

Lol. Does he also have an ugly girlfriend?
Saros has a "long neck" and all the same knocks as Dustin Wolf. While teams prioritize big goaltenders for all the points being made, athletic goalies can definitely still succeed--as Wolf has proven up to this point.
I'm incredibly excited to see Wolf get a regular shot at this thing. He might flop -- even top big goalies flop sometimes -- but he has huge potential AND he's going to be entertaining to watch. Calm athleticism in net with great puck tracking skills... gonna be a fun next few years.

I'm excited for Wolf as a regular.
Whether he succeeds or not, at least we'll get the answer to that. It's better to know than just to speculate and project like we've had to for the last couple of years.

Firstly, no goalie, regardless of his pedigree, is anything close to being a sure bet.
I assume you meant “ I just don’t see how he’s not going to be…”
Secondly, his height is to the top of his head. Having a long neck does not add to his height.

I think he means that he'd be an inch or two shorter if he didn't have such a long neck, so the body part of him (which blocks the pucks) is even shorter than his 6'0 height suggests.
"Despite dominating every league he's played in, Dustin Wolf's success may not translate to the NHL because he is shorter than an average NHL goaltender AND, more importantly, he has a long neck."

Sigalet and Labarbera's primary responsibility will be to stop him from chewing on his own massive neck.

Essentially we should be looking to draft goaltenders like Fatty Bombalatty so that they maximize the square footage of net that they cover.

Why are we talking about Wolf in here? I came to discuss the absolute obliteration of the Canucks in this trade lol. What a steal!
Now they either give Lindholm a bad contract or lose him for nothing...embarrassing themselves in the final two games against the Oilers was their prize.

He's just as wide with his equipment on as any other goalie. Pad size is determined by the rules, not by the size of the goalie's body.

OK, that makes more sense.
I agree that he looks much shorter in nets than his actual height. I was stunned to hear his actual height. He looks so small in nets.
