Barn Burner: The Boys are Back!! (Boomer, Pinder & Warrener)

One of my favourite things about Barn Burner is how funny all three of them can be and how the humour just organically comes through at the right time. It doesn't seem forced, set-up, or full of hyper masculine dude-bro jokes.

I don’t consider Pinder an amateur or hobbyist, but he certainly is not the pro that Boomer is. He gets by on being smart, well spoken and offering opinions (which tend to not be very consistent).

Warrener? Come on, he does no preparation at all from what I can see.

Boomer is the best on air talent that Calgary sports has ever had probably, not counting the PBP guys.

I find to Pinder to be really good at doing interviews. Some of the summer content last year was him doing one-on-one interviews and I think he is really good at it. I also think he does a lot of research and seems to come into a lot of shows with with interesting facts or stats. I really do think he probably does a lot of work in the background.

It was interesting that Conroy said he didn't have a trade done close to the TDL, and never asked Marsktrom to waive his nmc. So the insiders (Seravalli) who said Markstrom waived his nmc and the deal was rejected by upper management were wrong.

It’s cute that you think a Youtube channel with 10k subscribers, and a podcast with similar numbers, is enough for multiple people to earn a living from.

Here’s what Jiri, who used to work in broadcasting, had to say the last time the subject came up:

Their audience is not large enough to justify a lot of paid advertisers.
I suspect none of these guys are relying on this for real income but instead are doing it for the fun of it and for the passion. Which is wonderful.

The Nation Network says, we'll do your social media. We'll give you a producer. We'll put together a studio because we were thinking of doing it anyway for the guys that are already there. And we got a guy that does sales. He'll help you out. We'll work together, we'll work on a profit share. We'll work that out and see where we're at. We just said, yeah, okay, let's give it a shot. At that point, it was basically September into October. What the hell else are we going to do? Let's give it a shot. And it's funny, the sales guy that they were going to have us help out from Edmonton, he lives in Calgary now because he came here and kind of saw the appetite. We were very lucky. The show was very popular on the radio. It continues to be very popular. There's a lot of opportunity here. So he has moved to Calgary to kind of handle everything that's going on.

We've hired extra producers. We've got more shows coming. We have a studio in Marda Loop, which is kind of a cool little neighborhood. And like I say, it's been four months. I can't believe how far it's gone in four months. So, yeah, they do the back end stuff. We do some of the content, we help out on sales, we work on kind of a revenue share and we go from there.

And as it sits right now, I'm not retiring next year, but it's better than I really thought it was going to be.

This was from last year. So, it’s the three of them, plus multiple producers they hired, plus relocating a Sales guy to Calgary, plus a studio in Marda Loop, a year ago. And it’s grown since then.

But it’s just a hobby. Because Cliff, who knows nothing about it, said so.

Not enough to sustain the multiple people who work on it in front of the camera and behind the scenes. None of them are professionals. Just hobbyists.

Interesting that Conroy made it clear that the way to build is through trades and the draft. Also said he was leery of term on contracts. Does not sound like a guy who is planning on making a bunch of bad moves on July 1st. It is not hard to see (with a touch of personal bias) that he is committed to a 2-3 year rebuild where he accumulates assets and targets guys born between 2001-2004 in trades.

You’re picking a strange hill to try and die on - the global podcast business is massive, and Barnburner is doing very well for a new show, with a lot of paid advertisers. Pointing to a stale opinion from a CP member who used to work in broadcasting isn’t exactly convincing evidence to support your argument.

I know for a fact that Pinder doesn’t have another job.

I’m not calling them amateurs but their show on its own is not providing full time employment for all these people.

There is a similar network in the US called “Locked On”. Each market has several shows focused on local teams. I know a couple of the hosts that do the local shows in my market and their show has a larger following than Barn Burner. It isn’t anything close to a full time job for them. They are credentialed media, but they also teach and have other jobs.

Good post by Flames Addiction earlier about Pinder and being good at interviews. He is good at that and I agree, he is well read and knowledgeable.

he actually said this to Steinberg on Flames Talk at the end of the day that he dealt Marky on as well, so that’s cool to hear.

He’s pretty openly talked about being leery of term, and we also have Marek and Friedman who have talked about the Flames wanting to bump up the AAV to get short term deals in free agency. I do look at our roster and question where any free agent signing would fit, and that makes me wonder what we’re going to see on that trade front over the next week.

Yes, because some posters like to assume they were highly paid working at 960 and cannot possibly make that much hosting a Podcast. The facts are Rogers pays their on air staff poorly and the working environment is terrible. I like the slow days when they delve into their radio past, would really like them to bring Kelly Kirsche on one day and just tear Roger’s to shreads.

Are people actually serious about the barn burner crew not making a living doing the podcast? They 100% are making a living. Not millions but forsure they're making at least 120k which is a decent living for guys on a podcast.

I just can't imagine it's less than that. Managers at home depot make that much...hard to imagine a guy like boomer who has decades of experience accepting a job for less than that.
