I am confused, I though staying here was what Markstrom wanted, and he was reluctantly willing to waive for some teams to do us a favour. So your card is threatening to give him what he wants? I am struggling to see how that is a card at all

I did.
His tune about ‘surprised Flames pulled off a first’ appeared for the first time right after the trade was announced.

Go listen to it again.
Around the 5 minute mark he says "NJ offer moved forward...and they finally included a first round pick"

And who knows, the Devils aren't guaranteed anything next year. I know people are saying they'll be better but we just don't know yet. Theres a chance they dont do so well and that 2025 pick slides to 2026 where we would have the Flames pick and then Vegas' unprotected 1st and the Jersey unprotected 1st.
Here's to both teams ####ting the bed going forward.

It’s revisionist.

Exactly. Markstrom could be hot garbage again, the Devlis could have more injury woes or simply not gel. I don't see their floor lower than 10OA though, so if the Flames can snag Bahl and say a 12OA next year, they will have made out like bandits.
Worse case the devils are a top 10 team next year and the Flames are drafting 20 OA with this pick. Even at that rate, the pick could be used to possibly move up in the draft or reel in another young asset.

So if am getting this right, we are guaranteed to end up with the top 3 overall picks in 2026. If this does not happen I am going to be so mad at the Flames, the NHL, Trudeau, and probably Benghazi.

He didn't want to stay in Calgary. Thats why he's gone.

Anything higher than 20th overall pick next year and I think it’s a solid trade for the flames. If the devils go on a heater and win the cup? 32nd and bahl looks quite a bit weaker. Sucks to have to wait a year but if next years draft is even better than this, I think it’s worth the wait/risk

If we have picks 1, 2 & 3 going into the draft lottery, I guarantee we lose 1 OA, probably 2 too, lol

So, the insiders on this site were wrong? Weren't some people saying the return at one point included 1st + Holtz + Prospect?

Lots of things were thrown out there from lots of people. I have said before I am not an insider but I have made some friends in the NHL universe and I am happy to share what I hear as long as everyone understands it's nothing definitive and just what's out there. If I was an actual insider I would get paid for it, have my own website or be working for a major network, and not on here for hours every day.

No one knows what the return was. People just guessed.
A lot of the fault is at some of the insiders, like Freeman saying this trade would expedite our rebuild, and now he turns around and says Mercer was never involved and it was a 3rd round pick.
When you say stuff like that, people are going to guess that it's an important piece or pieces coming back.

Some people were saying a Mike Smith return as well. That turned out to be way off base.

Well it seems like that was what New Jersey was offering until they upped their offer to the 1st this week.

And there was no chance that that offer would be accepted ever. So it was way off. Fitz missed a potential playoff run based on that erroneous thinking.
