At what point do we accuse Sandman of making players up just so he can flex his super-human scouting prowess on us? Just kidding man, it's super impressive and valuable that you cover so much ground. All us draft junkies appreciate the astounding volume of knowledge you're laying on us.

They like him because he's a huge defence.

From the Kevin Bahl trade thread but very possibly indicative of what the Flames do at the draft. Especially considering the Honzek pick last year.
Dickinson = 6'3"
Yakemchuk = 6'3"
Sennecke = 6'3"
Have to think that these 3 might be more highly ranked than fans think if the current Flames management team wants to build around size that can battle through the playoffs.

They better draft a forward at 9 now. Connys just gone hog wild on collecting D men so far.

Just came to post similar. There's clearly a trend under Conroy to go with taller players. I'm getting the feeling the Flames first pick will be one of those three players unless Lindstrom or Silayev is available which would likely result in Conroy sprinting to the podium. I no longer see Catton, Iginla or Parekh as players they may take as there seems to be a vision of building an imposing roster of size for better or worse.

I see it as adding size when you can so that you can draft the high end skill that you cant usually get in trades
Brz Poirier Morin as smaller but high offense
Miro Bahl Grushnikov as larger bodies to balance it out

I still think the flames will take Iginla if he is available at 9th overall. And I hope Conroy is also going to make a real effort to get another pick in the top 12 of this draft. It will likely cost Andersson to do that and it will be a difficult trade to make - no one likes to trade picks that high on draft day. New Jersey is now down a defenceman after trading Bahl - they might be interested in Andersson as an upgrade and they still have their 10th overall pick to make that happen.

Would be weird to see that as a separate trade. If that was the idea, then I think they wouldve done it as one big deal at the draft.

I could see it as two completely separate trades. And New Jersey may want to see who is available at 10th overall before trading the pick. They might be high on 1 or 2 players that could be gone by then.

I don't think so. I think they added the size pieces from trades, and will focus on skill and speed in the draft.
The size thing seems more around building our blueline. If Iginla is the board he is our pick.

Sennecke wouldn't be my first pick but I can't ignore all the hype and the fact that it took a bit for his play to catch up with his size. I would be very happy with Lindstrom or Silayev at 9 as if they reach their ceiling they could be difference makers which is exactly what this organization needs in their talent pipeline.

Hey Sandman:
Did you have a draft profile on Bahl from his draft year?

Yeah I just don't want size to become the driver for first round picks. Skill first and then size as the tie breaker

Unfortunately, I don’t because I wasn’t writing profiles back then. I do remember he was drafted so high on being one of the best shutdown D-men in the CHL. He was a good skater for his size if I recall correctly, with plenty of room for improvement in that area.

I was on a hiatus from sportswriting then as well. Here's one of the guys I trust a lot from the 2018 yr - Brock Otten (now of McKeens)
"Kevin Bahl - Defense - Ottawa 67's
Love this kid. Behemoth 6'6, 230lbs defender who is a hybrid between being a pure throwback to the Derian Hatcher/Chris Pronger era, and a modern defender who can make quick decisions and move the puck. Thought he was Canada's best defender at the U18's this year, where his terrific work in his own end was on full display. The one thing I love about Bahl is how good his agility is for a big man in the defensive end. Lateral and backwards mobility are solid. So you've got this huge 6'6 reach, but he's also able to recover and stay with attackers as they drive the net. Also helps him recover loose pucks and dump ins quickly. Over the course of the second half, we really saw him start to use his size physically too. Becoming a lot tougher to play against and could be an absolute beast in the defensive end, if he isn't already. Offensively, he's better than he's given credit for. He's never going to win a scoring title, but his decision making with the puck in the defensive end has greatly improved, as has his exit pass. So good at preventing offenses from setting up their attack, because he's able to seal off forecheckers from getting to dump ins, and then makes a quick outlet to a wing to start the breakout. That -21 this year certainly isn't pretty, but I don't think it's indicative of his d-zone ability. He's smart in the offensive zone too. This guy's goals at the Hlinka, Top Prospect's Game, and the U18's were no fluke. He anticipates the play really well and as he gains confidence in his puck skill and shot, I think we'll see him take more chances and increase his offensive output. I just don't think you can argue against how well he's played when the stakes have been raised. Personally like Bahl better than Logan Stanley as an NHL prospect."
He had him ranked 11th amongst OHL prospects.
***
aside: interesting from one of my former OHL contacts:
"Bahl won four straight GTHL championships from 2010-2013. His team won the OHL Cup in 2014-15. He also scored a goal in the Ivan Hlinka Championship Game and won a gold medal for Team Canada in 2017-18."

Twitter Flames rumor guy CMPDave said the Flames had a really good interview with Demidov. Said Ivan would definitely play for CGY if they got to draft him.
Let's hope....
