Ohh... so we're essentially allowing them to shop the protected 2025 with the condition that if they move it, we get their 2026 unprotected? Or is there a caveat on the conditions, like Markstrom has to play x games or whatever?

Its top 10 protected, if they pick in the top 10 the pick rolls over to 2026.

I'll self quote on that. NHL.com seems reputable.

happy with that;
We are currently approaching ~ 10% in the McKenna sweepstakes without a game being played, and it's not even required that Calgary is the bad team.

As a Flames fan, I think we got good value, and (just as importantly), this sets the Flames up to be a bottom 10 team this year.
Seems like a good trade for both sides IMO.

Conroy is taking the same strategy with defensemen - acquire as many as possible, and see who develops.
Kylington (26)
Mironanov (26)
Pachal (24)
Bahl (23)
Okhotiuk (23)
Solovyov (23)
Kuznetzov (22)
Jurmo (22)
Grushnikov (21)
Morin (19)
Brzustewicz (19)
Hurtig (19)
If the Flames get 3 good players out of that group, they will have done very well.
Conroy is doing EXACTLY what he should be doing.

Folks thinking 1) we need all these D to make up for lack of using picks on D or 2) a strategy by the team to overindex on solid D and let forwards figure it out?

Just bad all around. Seems like it's either average for both parties, or instead one team did drastically better than the other. Not sure I've seen a high A or B for both teams but I'm too lazy to verify that, so it could be 100% made up by me.

It’s a good deal IMO. Mid to late first round pick is great for a 35 year old goaltender with two seasons left. Bahl makes up for the retention. Another bullet in the chamber and another defenseman to help rebuild a decimated back end.

Yeah these grades makes no sense at all. Seravalli had been saying for weeks that the Flames were in tough to get value back for Markstrom.
There were posters in the HF thread that were saying half the league wouldn't pick Markstrom off waivers for free. Devils fans were saying he wouldn't return a 1st round pick (nevermind the 10th overall) before the return was known.
Complete 180 after the return was announced.

I like that the competition has been created for sure too out of that list
Hope the Wranglers get what they need too in development of others which looking at the big picture is what we want . An organization where everyone is working towards getting somewhere. Complete culture change from what we've seen in the past.
Youth given a shot ? Who'd a thunk it? No more forcing in pieces that don't fit at all out of desperation...like warm bodies to plunk down into a roster knowing full well it ain't gonna work but let's do it anyway.
I hope Craig stays the course and remains true to a different philosophy.

Happy with the return over all. Like others, was hoping for the 10th overall in this draft. However, it was probably never a real possibility without adding quality young players from the flames (Coronato or Posposil). Have to remember what a Markstrom trade would have looked like one year ago today… the flames would have likely been the team including a first round pick just to get Markstrom off the books.
Love to see the flames collecting plenty of first round picks and young players with potential to become second pairing defensemen. Hopefully at least one of them works out.
Would still really love for the flames to get another pick in the top 12 of this draft. The only player that they might be willing to trade that could potentially return that is probably Andersson. And the only teams picking in that range that I think might be willing to trade their pick for him would be Ottawa and Buffalo… but I think both of them are unlikely to make that trade. I guess after trading Bahl to Calgary, maybe New Jersey would be interested in acquiring Andersson.

Trying to be cognizant of the paywall but these two sentences stick out to me on the rationale for the grade. Then you take into account Sec's scout insight and it makes ya wonder what this analysis is based on, outside of gut feelings, coulda-woulda-shoulda and getting articles out quick.
Quote:
When you lose a deal in this many ways — no prime pick, no prospect, no impact lineup player, money sent the other way — the grade can’t be anything but harsh.
|
Quote:
But Markstrom, especially with salary retained, is worth a lot more than that. Calgary should have been able to use the fact that the Devils were desperate for a No. 1 goalie to their advantage, and they really missed their chance to do that.
