I was hoping we'd get a forward in return.

I guess all the people saying it would be a gigantic return were wrong. That's pretty much what I expected, not terrible but not great.

Just had a curiosity does this cut into the room number of retention slots we have for trades next season?
This just got answered as I clicked. Send.

Maybe the best part in this is that Flames fans can be ready for a top 5 pick next year.

I highly doubt it, we're down multiple NHL defensemen, and reports are that Kylington and the Flames are all good and will have something worked out soon.

Yes. Flames will only have 2 salary retention slots until Markstrom's contract expires.

There was a time when some felt that the Flames would have to trade a 1st WITH Markstrom to get rid of him.
Ended up being a pretty good signing. A couple strong seasons, a poor one and a poor series. Mixed bag. But at the end of the day - then adding a 1st and a prospect on top the years of service - not bad.

Fair return for a goalie who rotates between amazing and absolutely terrible.
His inability to play at even a backup level against our biggest rival will always have me disliking him as a Flame.

Lifetime Suspension

I will say it again.
Mike Smith 25% retained netted Brandon Hickey, a 3rd and Chad Johnson 2.5 AAV.
Smith had 2 years left same age, same stats.
Aging goalies are not going to net you much. Getting a 1st is huge.

I find it hard to believe the offer at the deadline was worse than this.

So we only have 24 million dollars in cap space instead of 26.

" maintaining our commitment as a playoff competitive team."
They're really going out of their way to beat this drum and people still don't believe it.
