The Oilers would. Other teams wouldn't and in turn Leon loses that leverage with Oilers. Too much risk. NHL contracts are so different from the rest of the big 4.

I personally think Leon is overrated, but I can see tons of GM's not agreeing with me.

They had a nasty contract negotiation last time, and it felt like he did the Oilers a favour by doing this current deal.
I think he is out to get his money this time around.
A $15 million dollar player entering his 30's would be beautiful. Even if its in San Jose.

This seems like revisionist history considering it was panned as an overpay at the time.

I don't think there is much risk. Oilers will not trade McDavid and he has 2 years left. Playing 2 years with McDavid, Leon is a lock for 100+ and they have played 50 playoff games the last 3 years. He likely gets 2nd round or later playing in the Pacific and racks up tons more playoff points. His value won't drop even with some injuries, but a 2-year deal gives them 2 more cracks together in Edmonton.
Coming out of 8 straight years of 100-point season (1 shorten season pacing for way over 100) teams will be lining up to sign him 7 years. With the cap rising fast, likely the same cap hit he gets on the 2-year deal for 7 years.
I think Leon will wait this summer but if he signed, I would not be shocked at a 2-year deal rather than 8-year deal.

Austin signed 4 years at the age of 25. By the time Pissy is able to sign a new contract he’ll be in his “29” season. His new contract will kick in at “30 season.
Leon can wait till next summer and he will know McDavid’s futures most likely as well.

I never said he would. I also don’t think he would. I think he signs an 8 year deal this summer or is traded.

I can't see any way on earth Draisaitl would want 4 years, which would bring his next contract in at 33 years old. That's too old to take advantage of a short term deal to get to an 8 year deal like Matthews is doing.
And also I don't see any chance that his agent (obviously would be needing unput from Draisaitl) and Oilers management suddenly started talks while they're playing for the Stanley Cup and can't sign anything until July 1st, anyways.

Leon is going to do what is best for him for sure. Flames fans will point out how overrated they are, and the Oilers are, but I doubt they feel the same way. In the finals, racking up the points playing with McDavid and been the 2nd round or later 3 straight years. Lost the cup winner 3 straight years, unless they win it this year. I think he will think they are close and can win it in the next 2 years, then somewhere else when the team is too old and has no prospects and play somewhere nicer and make tons of money.

I wonder if Pissy would take a 4 year deal cause a new US tv deal will be in place once the contract ends. He could get another big deal in his mid 30's.

I think both Draisaitl and McDavid end up signing 8 year deals in Edmonton. They both seem to like Edmonton and like playing with each other. The hope is that they and Bouchard maximize their value in any contracts they sign with Edmonton.

Draisalt should definitely ask for 15 with the cap starting to climb again regularly. He's been underpaid for many years.
McDavid 16
Drai 15
Nurse 9.5
Bouchard 10
50 million for four guys and one is an anchor. Even if the cap goes to 100 million in a few years that's 50% for four guys through their prime years.

Bouch Bomb is better than Makar, he should be seeking 11-12 a year. Reset the d market for franchise defenceman.
McDavid should be going for close to the player cap at 20%. Right now that is 17.6 so he should be seeking 17-18 per year.
Drai should come in at 15-16.
Pay these men their money. Broberg coming out party, along with Holloway they have some decisions to make.

My brain would explode if a top tier player chose to sign a 4 year deal like is being suggested. That’s not betting on yourself that’s a willful denial of reality. You could easily cost yourself 60 million trying to make an extra 12. Bonkers

I agree that this will be tough to win but the contract don't kick in all at once. Next 2 years if they all stay could be some close calls for someone who does not want them to win.

It will be interesting to see what Lindholm ends up with lol.
Turned down $49 million in Vancouver. $68.8 million in Calgary. Already coming up to $20 million lost in career earnings.

This is not accurate.
There were a bunch of good young players signing that summer (including MacKinnon), and Draisaitl got more than any of them. He did not 'do the Oilers a favour'.
Having said that, he will be after as much as possible (as every player should) - especially because the contract ended up being a bargain.

Hard to believe now, but there was a year or 2 before Draisaitl broke out where that contract was considered an overpay

Yes, it was definitely an overpay. But that is the thing about the ever-rising cap - it is self-correcting.

Matthews just did it. But then again his deal ends at 31 while Leon’s would start at 30, so definitely different.
