I mostly agree, and I think it would largely depend on how much the Flames' scouts like a Player available at 5 above the rest.
Another less hockey related aspect is a player's marketability, and Iginla jr can make the owners a lot of money. Luckily, or unfortunately, depending on your perspective, the Iginla name is going to peak this city's interest in the Flames when the new building is finished.
I just hope that we draft the new face of the franchise with that pick, and that he's going to have some success.
Personally I would love to come out of this draft, with a Markstrom trade and a drafted future 1st pairing of Buium - Yakemchuk.

If you are those two maybe you'd think about doing 3 years (Draisaitl) and 2 years (McDavid), which gives you 4 more years together to try to win a cup.
Then you both become UFAs at 32 and 31 years old respectively and could easily still cash in on a 7 or 8 year deal.
You'd also be looking at a $100M+ salary cap at that point and I think some team would still give them him $16M+ for 7 years at 32/31 years old when the cap is that high and a max contract is $20M.
|
Based on what the league said about the revenue and what the cap should be, I think the cap will rise by 5% for at least 3 more years and will be 100 mil by then. If I'm Leon and want to see what Mcdavid does and try and win a cup in Edmonton and maximize the money I make. I'd sign a 2-year deal, $14 mil or more and then decide long term after than deal.
Can the Oilers win the cup after next year if Leon goes to $14 mil and Bouchard goes to $10 mil or so?

Actual insiders have speculated he doesn’t want the Matthew’s contract.

I can't imagine that a player or his agent would be actively trying to talk a contract while in the finals. If that is the case it shows where his head is at, and it isn't about the game or team.

That's why you know it isn't true. Say what you want about him, but he is a 100% committed player. Would love to have him on our team.

He would never sign a 4 year deal. He signs a max max in Edmonton or he’s gone with Mcdavid. This is crazy talk. He’s 28. By 32 he could be a shadow of himself. The cliff are harder on the big men.

Spector is guessing a 4 year deal but he isn’t connected at all. Frank mentioned on his (? Or another) podcast that his camp isn’t interested in the Matthew’s contract.

Is anyone going to pay a 32 year old 15 plus?
Now is his chance to cash in on a big deal. Hopefully an 8 year 128 deal, and 8 year 88 million deal for Bouchard to follow.

Why would he signs a four year deal? NHL Contracts are guaranteed. At 30 your think about your family and agents preach the what if’s hell of a lot harder.
Austin signed 4 years at the age of 25. By the time Pissy is able to sign a new contract he’ll be in his “29” season. His new contract will kick in at “30 season.
Leon can wait till next summer and he will know McDavid’s futures most likely as well.

15% of $92.5 mil cap is $13.87 mil per year. If he took 2 years at $14 mil he would make 15.14% of the cap.
Cap goes up to $97 and $102 mil the following 2 years, 7 years @ $14 mil with a different team is only 13.73% of the cap.
I could see him getting 9 years at $14 mil doing this, maybe more and try and win a cup in Edmonton without committing his career to Edmonton.
4 years makes 0 sense though. If he was a bit younger maybe, but at his age it makes 0 sense unless the cap goes up 5% every year for many years. At some point there will be seasons it won't though.

If Leon wants to see what McDavid does, I do think he could choose a 2-year deal.

He doesn't have to sign anything.
He would become a UFA when McDavid becomes eligible to sign a new contact.

I do think this cup run, as long as Florida wins, is bad for the Oilers long term no matter what. Most teams won't pay a 32-year-old $15 mil but Leon is putting up 120 points a year and his playoff PPG is near guys like Lemieux and Gretzky.
I personally think Leon is overrated, but I can see tons of GM's not agreeing with me.

I wouldn’t do it either.
I think the Flames should hold 9 and try to get another top 15 pick. If Tij is there and they choose to take him, great. If they pick another player over Tij, also great but hope they’re right. Otherwise there will be a thread on this site that will live for as long as Tij has a career and likely beyond.

I agree, there is a good chance he just waits. But I could also see him playing the cap going up game on a 2-year deal. I still think there will be some GM's even at 32 years old throwing a blank cheque at Leon.

Yeah, I could believe if that ask was over 8 years or if Edmonton was asking for a four year deal. Four years seems about the worst length for Draisaitl.

Yeah, I can see Leon wanting to get paid because he under paid on his last contract.
