Exactly, it completely depends on what Conroy is offering. He has cap space that in a re-modelling he can use to help other teams with their cap space problems or sign and trade guys a couple years later. IMO Conroy has not made many missteps so far if any so I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for sure.

I guess it depends on what Debrusk is looking for and what he's offered from other teams. You give him a modified NTC and maybe he feels like he has an opportunity to choose a contender at the deadline and make a cup run? Rebuilding clubs make these kind of deals pretty often.

I hate the idea of signing DeBrusk. He feels like a Brouwer type add.
To me, the best course of action is to keep selling off the 30 year old players for picks, prospects and under utilized assets.
Also, use cap space as a way to add talent that has soured on their current teams.
Keep looking for the Bennett/Forsling type players. Even if the Flames take a gamble on a Kotkaniemi or Dubois and it busts, they will have the cap to make those mistakes. But the gamble could pay off.

Mangiapane's most common linemates: Backlund and Coleman
Debrusk's most common linemates: Marchand and Coyle
I'm pretty comfortable with my stance.

Debrusk is a grittier Mangiapane but a bit less skilled.
This should be a pass. We have enough Mangiapane's on the team.

Debrusk is at least getting the Coleman / Hyman contract

Yeah Debrusk is probably getting 5 x 5 IMO, or something in that neighborhood.
I'd suspect Mang will get dealt at some point and Debrusk would take his spot if he indeed signs with the Flames.

There's really no point in adding a playoff performer on a bottom 5 team in the league, on paper.

disagree

Agree with Dino no way anybody can predict what the NHL looks like 5 years out. People can’t predict 2 months out properly. Who knows how long the rebuild takes. Calgary didn’t know what they had in Gaudreau… never know.

Debrusk isn’t moving the needle. He has limited upside but frankly is better than having dinosaurs on the team. If the idea is to fill a roster spot with a free agent young guy, I’m good with it. If the idea is to sign him long term because you think he’s a centrepiece, I think that would be a huge stretch and frankly a mistake. He doesn’t consistently enough create his own chances and much like players like him on other teams, benefits hugely from the stars around him who’s best defenders play against which opens chances for him. He’s a solid third liner and maybe on a bad team a second liner but to sign to anything over three years at $4M, naa.

Any team that gets decent goaltending and opportunistic scoring can make the playoffs in the NHL.
If everything broke right for the Flames next year - if Kuzmenko, Huberdeau and Sharangovich all have career years, and if Wolf is a legit 50-55 start goalie, and the defense can hold together, they could absolutely be a playoff team. They couldn’t do anything, but they could get in.
That isn’t very probable based on what we’ve seen, but hockey is funny.

If he has a good attitude, plays hard and WANTS to be in Calgary I would totally be on board. Who cares the cost at this point? This isn't a capped out team and won't be for a few years.

Signing players to help now only hurts long term, that's the 'why' in why we shouldn't.

Which means we could also be more than 5 years away from the playoffs.
Makes no sense to pick up Debrusk. We aren't close to being a contender.

Does make some sense as we know nothing behind the scenes. Sharangovich, kuzmenko, eat bread and the outside possibility if coleman moving by trade deadline may have conroy looking at a long term wing as the younger players ease in. Still have to put a team on the ice and may hint at bigger things.

Nothing imminent but I’m still told we’ve seen the last of Markstrom in a flames jersey.
It’s been quiet, but hoping Florida can finish it off tonight and the real offseason can begin.
