Because Markstrom holds all the cards of where he can be traded to. Rumours are he wants to play in the east for better travel time and getting to see his family more. Wouldn’t be surprised if he rather be in US so not as much border crossing time.

None of them are picking in the top 10. The Devils and Senators are the only two bidders I know of that can offer that.

Hence why the Devils and Sens top 10 picks likely aren't in play and other teams are trying to beat more reasonable offers from those two teams.

I dunno jayswin, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that pick is in play. If you were GM of the Devils would you do it?

I’d definitely very seriously think about throwing that pick in myself.

If im jersey and ten is in play, and lets face it why would conroy ask for less, i probably go markstrom 50%, pospisil, calgary second, for ten. Conny cones back no second we are retaining or we take a contract back, and if a contract comes back a prospect comes with it.

I guess we will see.

I don't think it would be out of play if the Flames fully retained and added, I just feel that's not the framework we're looking at. My guess is some retention (maybe 15-25%) to get next years first and a prospect/young player that Conroy likes.

To get the 10th OA I bet you need more like 50% retention, plus adding a young player that the Flames value (Pospisal maybe?). Personally I'd do it, but I don't think the Flames will pay what it takes for 10th OA.

But again I'd be more than happy to be completely wrong, and ultimately I'm just putting things together between all the inside rumours we're hearing and selecting which ones I believe the most.

Agreed I’d do that deal if I was Calgary and that’s probably a bit more fair as then NJ feels like they aren’t totally losing out on youth with the Posposil add.

IMO you have the retention backwards if the Flames are going to add a 28th and take Palat. Markstrom and Mangiapane should be going over full freight and the Devils should take 50% of Palat’s contract. His deal is awful, maybe top 5 worst contracts in the league now.

If Conroy is talking with Ottawa, then something around a swap of 7 and 9 is obviously on the table - there is a consensus that you’ll still be getting a really good player at 9.

Ottawa can then secure a goalie to stabilize the organization and still draft top-10.

So if Ottawa’s pick is in play, which there’s no reason for it not to be, Jersey’s has to be as well, otherwise this deal is done and Marky is a Senator.

I still just don't believe we'll see the 10th overall involved in a Markstrom trade.

Whether it's Chris Johnston, Frank Seravalli, or Pat Steinberg - there's no shortage of insiders raising questions around how much Marky returns. Seravalli and Steinberg both believe Flames need to add if the 10th were to be involved, and Johnston generally questions a goalie's value in a trade.

Holtz + something, I see that. 10th? Not without a decent sized add on the Flames side.

Ottawa also has: 25,38, and four fourth rounders may not necessarily be 7. I think ottawa is looking for coleman type players and defence so a trade could be had without markstrom being involved.
