They said basically day 3 after the shock announcement of moving, that they were going to be generic year 1, with the name and uniforms etc, while they nail the branding and name for year 2. It takes that long for everything to run through the league channels for any team for a rebrand or for uniform and logo changes.

I expect a fully or mostly different color palette to go with the official name for 2025, though in a few years, fans will clamour for one of these as an alternate.

No I don’t think they are planning to change the colors. Which are already good IMO.

I could see another accent colour added ... in the logo perhaps. The trend in sports is three colours or more.

The HC that makes up their logo actually stands for "Hockey Club".

For their first season (1910), the Habs were simply known as ‘Les Canadiens’. When the gym burnt down, the hockey team changed its name to Club de Hockey Canadien, which it officially remains to this day.

So even in that case, the nickname is older than the official name.

The only NHL team without a nickname before now was the Toronto Hockey Club, which won the Stanley Cup in 1918. They poached the player contracts of a previous team, the Toronto Blueshirts, but didn't acquire rights to the name, so they just went with Toronto HC. After that they changed officially to Toronto Arenas, which is the name engraved on the Cup.

'Hockey Club' definitely isn't the best name they can pick, but it's probably the best of the six they've narrowed it down to... definitely a lot of minor league options in there.

HC/Hockey Club is the worst choice. By far. It's so unbelievably bush league, like they can't even muster the effort to come up with any sort of identity or brand.

Frankly, I'm shocked they had enough imagination to come up with a third color for the palette.

Man, you cheer for the “Flames” whose colours are red and yellow… like Flames. Whose logo was just the last team’s logo with a different letter.

Maybe cool it with the imagination station lecture.

It's just a temporary place holder until they perfect the branding they want to go with in the long term. Really not a big deal.

Not that I am a fan of most of the names shortlisted either, but I imagine the logo and uniform designs will be more inspiring once they figure out exactly what they want to do.

That wasn't the choice, though, it's a one year placeholder. The name is still being voted on.

It's ridiculous that this process takes so long. Every other NHL team that has ever relocated had its new name, colours, and uniform ready to go in time for their first training camp.

Heck, when Conn Smythe bought the Toronto St. Pats, he changed their name to the Maple Leafs in mid-season. He got them in their new uniforms for their next game, and changed the team colours to the current white and blue that summer.
