Cap-strapped, aging core with zero assets to bring in big fish via trade like they have every year so far.
Ticking time bomb

They will find a way out of Stone and Piets contract after next season just watch just in time to have 20+million free cap for the 25 season

Even if they do they are running out of assets to trade. UFAs will only take a team so far and usually it isn't that far lol

Let's just do Markstrom for Mercer straight up, and call it a day.

It makes sense that Markstrom had more value when a team was getting him for three playoff runs vs two.
You could argue that with more suitors in the offseason, Markstrom’s value has increased. But if one of those teams is draft asset poor (the Leafs) and another a franchise that Markstrom would probably block with his NTC (the Senators), I don’t know that pushes the Devils beyond what they offered before the deadline.

have to think part of Keefe's interview process with Fitzgerald was the question around the goalie situation and what are you doing about it.
Keefe wont want a repeat of T.O. with all high flying offensive talent and no tender to stop the puck, would think some promises were made on the front as well that pressures Fitz to pull the trigger.

We don't really know what his value was. We don't know what the package they negotiated was either.
I have been guessing a draft pick and Holtz.
Now we have some reporters saying 10th overall is in play, one guy saying his value is down.
What if the offer was a protected 25 1st and Holtz. Is getting 10th overall really a downgrade?
If we end up with a 3rd and conditional 5th and some throw in prospect that might be down in value, but its what Mike Smith got at the same age and contract.

Yeah, Flames are kind of stuck if Markstrom is Devils or bust now. Flames will need at least two serious options he'd waive for.

He'd probably waive for LA if he'd waive for NJ.

I don't see any package where the 10th is a downgrade unless Seravelli is crazy high on Holtz.

What about LA. How unserious of a team are they when you go into the playoffs with Cam Talbot and David Riitich tandem.
Toronto probably needs a goalie. They have a GM who loves to waste picks on goalies, or heck waste picks on anything he can get his hands on.

The rumour was Markstrom wanted to go east. But if not, maybe the Avs? Grubauer did OK, but Markstrom would be better.

Devils:
Marky 50% + 28th
for
10th overall
Sens:
Marky + 28th
for Korpisalo + 7th overall
This feels like the framework imo

Exactly, we don't know what the offer was.
We do know that the NJ 1st round pick that was allegedly a part of the deal was absolutely not expected to be #10.

It couldnt have included the 2024 1st because of the conditions that existed on it. So it was 2025 protected most likely

Yeah, that's why the 10th OA thing doesn't seem right to me at all. They were allegedly offering some pick (maybe this years first, maybe next years, maybe a second).
But even in offering this years first at the deadline, the idea would be that they would have made the playoffs this season and the pick would have been late teens, maybe 20's. Not sure why they'd suddenly be given a top 10 pick and say "okay, yeah you can still have that now that it's waaaaaay more valuable than 2 months ago".
I still think 2025 1st makes the most sense.

I’ve been lead to believe a deal is already in place for a trade to NJD, 2nd hand knowledge but I trust who told me.
Would be interested to know if sec or diss have heard any updates.
Got this about 10 minutes ago, Markstrom wanted this quiet and not to be a bidding war.

And no, contrary to the dummy comments "look at these guys that must hate the Flames and WANT them to have terrible trade returns", I would love it if I was wrong and Conroy gets that 10th OA.
If there's any hope, it'll definitely require major retention and/or adding a significant piece on our end (maybe the Vancouver 1st). And I would happily do either or both of those to get another top 10 pick.
