The age difference is a small factor in what each team is looking at. They did end up signing Schneider, but in each case the goalie is a 2 year deal. In each case the goalie was pretty much fully formed.
The difference in experience and track record though, favors Markstrom, as do the advanced stats. Plus, Vancouver was desperate to unload a goalie.

Make no mistake, if Markstrom was years younger, he’d be more perfect.
New Jersy has a young team, they’d prefer a younger goalie.

NJ has a team on the edge of winning. They want a proven goalie. Look, they were extremely interested at the TDL. Why would their priority change now?
What they should be doing is getting Markstrom and drafting or trading for a young guy as well.

Sure. That’s a fine preference. But it has to align with availability. If we get beat by another team with a younger lock as a starter, I wouldn’t be surprised.
I would be surprised if they traded for a goalie who need development or needed to prove he can start. They’re just wasting time then.

They need a goalie who’s more than likely to be good for right now + 2-4 years.
They need someone mature, who can be the guy for 55 games a year.
That’s Markstrom.
If I’m giving up the 10th overall pick, I don’t want a guy who lost his job on a first place team, I want the guy who kept a bottom-5 roster from drafting bottom-5.

He is 34, can be really good but known to choke and take a long time to recover.
The Devils have a team to compete for the next 7-10 yrs. He is a stop gap.
But he is probably the best available right now. The Flames would be lucky to get a top pick for him

The Ottawa rumours are intriguing. They were in on Tanev and made it pretty obvious they wanted him at the trade deadline and that they'd target him hard in the offseason. Markstrom loves playing with Tanev (as would most goalies), and Tanev enjoys playing in front of Markstrom and both of them are better with each other around (they've played 10 years of their careers together).
Since Ottawa can't tamper, it'll be a little difficult to tell Markstrom that they'll get Tanev no matter what, but the fit is there, and if they do trade for Markstrom, it wouldn't be that difficult to convince Tanev to come there, and I'm sure Markstrom would make a call or two to Tanev -- if they haven't already talked about it. It would be a pretty decent place to spend the last 3-5 years of their careers on a team that could take the next step and become contenders, especially with a solid shut down defender and high end goalie.
Ottawa becomes a pretty interesting team with those two and the rest of the core they have, so the value is there for a decent deal for the Flames.

If Conroy can snag that 10th overall it's a pretty significant win for him. I only see 10th OA being in play if there is 50% retention, or if there's a pick going back of note to NJD in the deal.
A 34 year old goalie just hasn't returned something as high value as a 10th overall pick in the modern NHL era. I'm not saying it won't happen, but that if it does - it's extremely good work by Conroy.
|
I think a lot of fans are putting two separate tidbits into one. New Jersey is rumoured to be back in on Markstrom and they have stated that the 10th OA could be available for the right player.
I'm with TheScorpion, I think we'll likely get the 2025 1st and a prospect. I'm happy with that in a return for Markstrom. Sure, there's a chance we get the 10th OA, I just don't see it, personally. I think they'd do it for a younger goalie, locked up.

I just disagree. Younger players always hold more value. I don’t see the comparable. Fleury is closer to a Markstrom comparable. I’ll be quite happy if the 10th ends up in the Flames hands but I don’t see it.

Ullmark “lost” his job to one of the best up-and-coming goalies in the league. You’re selling Ullmark short, he just happened to be on a team that rode with the hot hand and he wasn’t the guy.

Younger players with term or that you can easily sign have more value. If they are good.

I don't call that a player that you can easily re-sign.

Draft Pick
|
I think with devils not having a second I see it differently; we move Marky for the 10th pick we have to give our second pick 41 and devils throw in a 5th round pick.
no retention.
Flames with 3 picks in the first make a splash especially with our rivals to the north playing for Stanley cup Connie needs to kick it at the draft.
Iggy Jr,Dickinson or Parekh and maybe Elick or Luchanko at 28th.

This makes sense, I would do the retention though and perhaps make it the Dallas 2nd. The retention is valuable for the Devils, have 8 roster spots to fill and an extra $3MM makes that much easier. Mercer is an RFA that needs to be signed.

I think it starts to get interesting when we bring money into it. Cap is going up.
If flames retain 50% on markstrom, and we take Allen back with no retention, then both teams change goalies and essentially pay the same amount of money. Obviously flames overpay for goalies at that point but with a higher salary floor it’s not terrible. Dump Allen for whatever we can at some point.
What is a free $3 million worth to devils?
Conroy needs to be careful about future year draft picks because I think Markstrom does move the needle, and therefore it’s a worse picking number.
For me, it’s always a gamble with draft picks, but the opportunity to take 2 top 10 players is pretty exciting.

That wasn’t a ridiculous overpay at that time. It was 8.7% of the cap and the Devils obviously thought he was a long term starter. Markstrom is 7.36% and Bobrovsky is a whopping 12.27%.

I think the trade goes down at the draft, when it gets to pick 9 and the Flames see who is left on the board. Then they decide if they want to sweeten the deal to NJ to get pick 10.

Good point. And the opposite could be true too!
