I have my doubts about Connie being allowed to trade Markstrom although I do think that it would be the right move.

If he's not allowed to trade Markstrom in this situation, we may as well just fold the franchise.

Yes, there’s urgency for them to make the playoffs next season. But their window is the next 5-6 seasons. They’re not a team desperate for a short-term fix before their window closes in 1-2 seasons.

There is every reason to believe Jacob Markstrom will be an effective/elite goaltender for the at least the next four years.
There's value in not overcommitting to a particular goaltender.

Been saying this as well for a while. Some suggested the need to win now before the have to pay Hughes and Nemec. Reality is they probably aren't winning the cup before the pay Hughes next summer.
So, what is their window? IMO J Hughes is a steal of a deal and Hischier is too. Hischier likely does not get a huge raise next deal, window should be before Jack hits UFA. IMO that gives them many years to build this team.

Apparently if Fitzgerald doesn't make this trade he will be fired.

NJD are NOT heading into next year with Jake Allen as #1....or Fitzgerald will lose his job. There are no 23-25 YO G's that move the needle AND are available.
I can see him moving #10 as long as that late 1st goes back so he can still sell the "1st rd pick" part of things.

My, one time at a party, credible Flames source conversation reassured me that ownership has no interest in interfering or restricting hockey operation's decision making. Ownership has alot of faith in the hockey ops team.
The trade fell through before only because NJ did not offer enough back. Conroy held his ground knowing there would be more teams in play in offseason.
Markstrom trade with retention is well within Conroy's discretion.
NJ might be our trade partner but Fitz will have to offer good value in return or someone else will get Markstrom.
Is a 10OA fair value for Markstrom retained. That I am not sure?

That matches with what I reported leading up to the deadline that the Flames at that time insisted on Mercer being in the return.

Markstrom as the primary piece leaving and the 10 OA being the primary piece returning doesn't fit the kind of retooling, "something for now, something for later" kind of return we can expect ownership to be onboard with.
Predicting Markstrom with 50% retained & Flames 1st round (28 OA) for NJ 3rd round (61 OA), New Jersery 3rd round (77 OA), Alexander Holtz, and a conditional 2025 second round pick (via Winnipeg) that becomes New Jersey's lottery protected 1st round pick if Markstrom wins 30 games OR the New Jersey Devils enter the second round of the 2025 playoffs. If the 2025 1st round pick for NJD is in the lottery, the Flames get Jersey's 2026 1st round pick, unprotected.

I am going with Markstrom with 25% retention from the Flames with possibly another team eating 25% and Pospisil for #10 and Holtz.

I can 100% guarantee you that trade is not happening. From what I have heard if the Flames don't get their asking price, one of which we have enough intel to know is a 1st round pick guaranteed the Flames will not trade Markstrom.

If Marky wins 30 games or NJ enters the 2nd round of the playoffs, the 2025 pick will not be a lottery pick.

I would take that in a heartbeat, don't think NJ would though. That seems a bit lopsided. I'd be very happy to be wrong though.

Conroy has shown if he can get a 1st he will. Holtz isn’t good enough to make him downgrade a 1st round pick.
Also we are rebuilding. Enough of this retooling crap.

Right, I meant that if those things don't happen and the 2024-2025 Devils become a dumpster fire that misses the playoffs and their first round pick gets entered in the lottery, the Flames don't get it.
