Yea, don't think making the Playoffs is an issue for Bennett

I bet it'll be a second in this draft or next and a project/mid level prospect. I'll be fine with that. The time to nail that trade was at the deadline and there was allegedly some sort of breakdown or hard line of Mercer or something.

Correct and not trading him was a mistake by Conroy / Flames. Pretty obvious at the time and mentioned by many on here they should have pulled the trigger.

I still think it was a retention issue facilitated by Mr.Bean, I'm sticking with that giving me another reason to be glad he's gone.

Man crazy that you mention that. Bennett was a real regular season hero for the flames, I’ll never forget when he torched the league for 140 points that one season.
Oh…wait…he put up 140 points over 6 1/2 years?? And he’s a hero? Nah man, Bennett should be the perfect target for Vegas. He sucks in the regular season but is a playoff beast. Bennet regular season is completely replaceable

Bean was just a fall guy and a spokesperson for the owners.
Darren Dreger is our assistant GMs cousin. And he said himself that Flames ownership nixed a deal Conroy had made.
We will definitely be getting less value than we would have at the deadline. How much less remains to be seen.

Bean was not involved in hockey decisions. He was the owners mouth piece.

Dreger was on Barn Burner last week.

Seems like ownership didn't want to call it a season.

Exactly, the Flames historically are a regular season team uninterested in post season success. Bennett would never be a fit here. He is someone the Oilers should pursue next offseason though, sign Leon and McDavid, give away Kane or add an asset to get rid of him and sign Bennett.

Bennett would have fit in, to win team's need players like him
Flames miss-managed Bennett, and basically made poor decisions.
I can't see Bennett signing with a Canadian team,

Well I was talking about Dreger saying something similar a couple months ago. He is careful to choose his words to not get his cousin in trouble.... but its seems ownership overstepped their boundary yet again.
We wanted to go on a cup run after losing 3 of our top players. And then we proceeded to lose like 8 straight right after the deadline showing once again that our ownership are a bunch of clowns.

The regular season does not mean crap. Ask Mitch Marner and Elias Petterson right now if they would have rather played well in the playoffs or regular season.
All that matters is playoffs. Nobody cares how good you are when it doesn't matter.

I just don't think that is something Dreger would say if he didn't believe it was a likelihood given that his cousin is our AGM, and historically Dreger has been very accurate when Nonis is involved.

We’ll never get any level of confirmation on anything like this though.
Dreger is not the only who has mentioned this.
Just go back and look at the pathetic press conference last year where John Bean steps in and effectively talks over Don Maloney about the state of the team - there was pretty clear involvement from at least the Bean level as to how to approach the 23/24 season.
To me, the fact that Bean is gone gives me a touch of hope that perhaps things will be different at that level going forward.

Yeah, if came down to not wanting to retain for two years then at least I get it but if it’s actually true they wanted to make a playoff off run then yuck

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
If I recall, and this may have been Dreger's first interview about it around the deadline, but he said ownership/management "didn't want to send the wrong message" to the team by trading away Markstrom.
Which is hilarious given they traded all of their UFAs as promised at the start of the year which pretty much crippled the team given 3 of them were D.

Yet Marner and Petterson make way more money than Bennett. So, someone cares.
