I think everyone believes you have a better chance of drafting a star with a top 10 pick.
I doubt anyone believes it’s a guarantee. It’s just increasing your odds.
I don’t understand your second sentence. What is “it”?

I meant you trade for a pick and hope it becomes a top 10 later
It’s hard when it’s already top 10

Bennett isn't a star either, though, and he alone wouldn't change the fortunes of this current Flames team in any remotely meaningful way.

If people think we are getting a star forward back for Markstrom, I think they are in for a disappointment (Bennett with a goal tonight).

Yes I'd agree. Which is why I'm skeptical will be landing one. Which is also why I said I'd be willing to add to get one. Would Jersey trade their 1st for Markstrom and the Vancouver 1st? Does Andersson and the Vancouver 1st interest anyone? I think Jersey is the one team who might be willing to sacrifice future for now. The other teams I don't see a huge rush because a top 10 pick could play in a year or two. Jersey needs a goalie and you're not finding one soon in the draft. They are also deep in forwards and defense that the pick is less important. But they will have options for a goaltender if they're shopping their 1st.

We will definitely see if we will get our stars in the draft
Over the next 1/2 dozen years (more or less) we are going to have some really high first round picks and in five to ten years we will have a pretty good idea if any of those picks are going to be star players. This team is going to be bad for quite a while.
The real trick will be to see that there are bums in the seats two years from now

He absolutely is a star. Maybe you mean he isn't a superstar but he continually is one of the best players on a team that's about to go to b2b finals.
He's a star.

He is a good and useful player with a career high of 49 points in a season. He is not a star by any measure whatsoever and the Flames would still be a bottom-feeder if they got him back.

Bennett is something else they don't have a formal term for yet, but the definition is far from "average nhler".
A different kind of impact maker that every team needs.

Stars aren't measured just by points. He is a star by a lot of measures, one being his impact on the game.

Yea... you can't judge Bennett like any normal player. Esepcially can't judge him based on his regular seasons. He truly is his own breed of player.
Playoff Bennett is 100% a star. A force to be reckoned with every shift.

Top 10 picks are so valuable that adding doesn’t do much. This is not a video game trade.
NJ will trade their 2025 first for sure, protected, but the 2024 likely is not for sale.
If they are trading their 2024 first, they’ll need to get a younger goalie like Saros with an extension.

Ullmark being made available will ruin the market for Markstrom imo.

I think Markstrom will be traded this summer and the return will be fine, but it will apparently shock a large portion of this board, proposing top 10 pick returns.
I bet it'll be a second in this draft or next and a project/mid level prospect. I'll be fine with that. The time to nail that trade was at the deadline and there was allegedly some sort of breakdown or hard line of Mercer or something.

I don't see them being bottom 3 bad but they will most likely be drafting close to top 5 and that's right where they want to be given the conditions of the Monahan trade.

Will Chicago, SJ and Anaheim be as bad next year? There should be some improvement.

Has a starting goalie ever been traded for that little? I know the Hawks had a fire sale with Fleury just to get something at the deadline but is there even another example where a starter got that little in return?

The Flames gave up the 35th overall pick for a 31 year-old Brian Elliott, who had one year left on his contract. Elliott had just taken the Blues to the Conference Finals, winning 9 games (only the two Finals goalies won more playoff games that season).
The Flames gave up a 2018 3rd rounder, the rights to an unsigned Chad Johnson (expansion draft fodder), and the rights to Brandon Hickey (unsigned NCAA player with one year of college remaining) for a 35 year-old Mike Smith, who had 2 years remaining on his contract.

I mean unless your team is Vegas you expect most players to play during the regular season. Bennett is a bulldog for 28 or less games a year and otherwise forgettable for the other 82.

The playoffs don’t matter when you don’t make the playoffs *forehead tap*

47 Playoff games with Florida over 4 seasons, including now back-to-back Finals.
Yea, don't think making the Playoffs is an issue for Bennett
