His dad never did...so I doubt he would.

Sons of former NHLers tend to be the most shrewd negotiators when it comes to contracts TBH.

It's not like he was raised in Calgary, he was quite young when Iggy left Calgary.

Exactly. Tij was born August 2006 and Iggy was traded March 2013.

Tij was 6 when he left here

Hopefully he really liked his grade 1 teacher

To be honest? I'm tired of the whole 'hometown discount' angle we as Flames fans seem so keen on getting from our star players. We should pay our superstars what they deserve, and use the remainder to fill out the roster. No roster is perfect but we have to avoid this whole Treliving-era idea of nickle and diming our stars until they want to leave.

I think the position thing actually hurts Iginla’s ranking. He would probably be ranked higher as a centre (which he started out playing) if everything else was equal. There are probably some C and D on that list that are a little inflated due to position, and some C that will have to switch to the wing to stick in the NHL.

William Nylander, Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk. 3 wingers. Three sons of well-known NHLers. 3 guys taken after at least one centre or defenceman (or both!) they turned out significantly better than.

That’s why you go BPA regardless of position.

Yeah, people complained about possibly overpaying Gaudreau and Tkachuk and now we have nothing to show for it.

Lock up the young stars and pay them whatever it takes to do it.

That is a whole lot of expectations no?
While i agree if he was a center he would be a consensus top ten pick. However i dont see him as best player where we pick no matter how the draft actually goes.

From past drafts we know big centers and defence tend to go higher than expected.

If health ends up not being an issue Lindstrom 100% projects as #1C.

If Lindstrom stayed healthy all year there'd be an argument if he or Demidov was the 2nd best prospect. The size and speed are waaay too tantalizing. PWF style 6'3" - 6'5" speedy center? Yeah, that's unicorn stuff.

Preach.

It was one thing when we were icing $20M rosters against $90M teams in Colorado, Detroit etc and funding the payroll with scratch tickets.

This has been a cap team every year there’s been a cap - if guys are taking a discount, it’s because we have four or five studs that all need deals and we can’t pay them all $12M.

Yeah teams like to get it backwards sometimes - nickel and dime the stars and then overpay the guys filling in around the edges. Those are the guys you should be hunting for bargains for.

Honestly doubt it.
If he's there, you take him. The only thing is there's so much pressure on management to nail this pick, would any question marks on a player - like injuries - discourage taking someone like him?

Some weird alternate universe maybe, same one where the flames get a first overall lol. Only way i can see it happening is if pretty much all the top defencemen go pretty much in a row.

At 9th OA? Nope, the risk is worth the reward. Even if it takes a longer development curve. Juice is totally worth the squeeze.

Vontae Mack, no matter what.

Oh yeah I would take him for sure.

Honestly, as much as some people think Tij is a lock pick if he's there at 9 (I like Tij, but I'm not rendering an opinion on him in this post), but I think if Catton or a top D is available I do think this org goes with whoever they think BPA is because of the pressure to get this pick right.

I will try to avoid being antagonistic here.

It isn’t that you ONLY get top centres and defensemen at the top of the draft - it’s that the top of the draft is the easiest place to find them.

But you can’t fixate on position with 18 year olds. The Habs did that with Kotkaniemi and missed out on Quinn Hughes and Brady Tkachuk as a result.

In the Flames’ case, they’re not picking at the top of the draft - they’re picking 9th.

There’s no reason to believe this team will draft any lower over the next three years - they have 11 UFAs over the next two seasons (12 if you include Markstrom, who will be dealt this summer, hopefully before the draft).

If they think Tij is gonna be even 80% of his dad, take him - if this draft has eight other players that are 80% of Jarome Iginla, it’s the draft of the decade.
