I don't see why SJ would do that, I thought about that too. I think we would have to send more assets than just #2.

Yeah, I think that's the only "trade down" scenario I would entertain. I like Demidov and Levshunov about equally so I wouldn't have an issue dropping 1 slot.

Most year i wouldn’t dream of it but yakemchuk could end up being the best defencemen in the draft. For me chances between two and ten are pretty close.
Demidov is flashy yes but will all that translate or will he just be flashy? At the end if the day a guy who probably projects as a top pairing defencemen or top line winger the defencemen goes first every time. If we were set up at center then ya take a shot at a flashy russian winger but were not that.

They would have to really want Demidov and Flames would have the leverage in that case.
And even then if it was #2 and #28 (Canucks pick) for #3 and #14 I think I'd make that move, especially if the Flames aren't sold on Demidov as their #2.

Helenius probably projects as a high end 2nd line center, Maybe a point per game top line center if he hits his ceiling.. Tij probably a top 6 winger, is he an elite top line goal scoring winger? Maybe, the scouts get to earn their money in drafts like this.

Iginla is as much of a center as Helenius is, maybe even more so.

Wait what? Based on what? Iginla had a cup of coffee at C during the U18's but is almost primarily used as a winger. Helenius is a projected C.

And Iginla was a factor on three goals in the gold medal game and worked seamlessly with McKenna on the powerplay. Who they’re for sure gonna be in a position to select next year
You can play positional news games at the top 2 or 3 picks - not at 9/10.
If Tij Iginla is there at Calgary’s pick, he’ll be a Flame.
If they have to trade an extra pick or two to ensure they get him at anywhere from 5-9, it’s probably a good decision too.
This kid is really good. His height and weight are the same as Jarome’s in his draft year. He’s gonna play at 205-15. Most experts say he’s got a top-2 shot in the draft, along with Eiserman.
He’s gonna tear this league apart - only question is, does he wear 21 or 24?

Mckenna is a 2026 eligible, which makes his performance even more crazy.
And honestly you're either more optimistic than me or more pessimistic than me (Depending how you look at it) if you think that the Flames will be in a position to draft 1st overall in any season, let alone one with a generational talent.

We made the playoffs when everyone had us in the McMickey sweepstakes.
Although I would not trade that run for him anyways.

It’s optimism - they’re gonna have Dustin Wolf and the Worst Statistical Goalie in the NHL as their one two after they trade Markstrom.
They have 33% of an NHL blue line.
They have no impact NHLers under the age of 23.
Their two most dangerous wingers - Kuzmenko and Sharangovich - could be traded.
They’re going to struggle to win 30 games.

You sure about that?
We have people saying we should start trading for "star" players now and pushing for the playoffs because this isn't a bottom 5 team in the NHL.

Man I feel for Wolf, almost no tougher scenario to break into the league than a team dragging its feet pre-rebuild, though I guess remembering how much everyone loved Freddy Braithwaite for standing on his head even when he gave up 3 or 4 and lost, if he plays his game maybe he could surprise and win the fans over despite getting shelled.... Hoping they can bring in someone to really take the brunt of the load, play 55 games and just absorb a ton of shots and bad stats.

Oh it very much is - their 1st round pick this year isn’t likely to make the roster.
Their 1st round pick from last year isn’t gonna play.
If their 1st round pick from 2021 can learn to stay healthy, that would be a welcome change.
They’re probably going to do what they did this year - cycle guys through from the AHL and see what they have. They’ll probaby call up at least five or six defensemen, and a similar number of forwards.
Kuzmenko, Sharangovich, Huberdeau, Kadri and Weegar is a near elite powerplay, with limited sample size. They should be watchable if nothing else.
40% of that group could also be traded by the deadline if they’re not interested in extending for a reasonable number.
But against teams that know what they’re doing, they’re going to be overmatched and outgunned most nights.

Are you saying that Calgary will for sure be in a position to select first next year?
Two problems with that.
Calgary needs to win the lottery and McKenna is only draft eligible in 2026.

This is a fun tool, allows for a mock draft and simulates the lottery as well.
https://draftprospectshockey.com/draftsim/#/
In my sim, Coyotes won the draft lottery. I picked the following for the Flames:
#9- Tij Iginla
#29- Cole Hutson
#41- Ryder Ritchie
#64- Yegor Surin
#74- Carter George
#84- Petr Sikora
#106- Matvei Shuravin
#107- Maxim Velikov
#170- Miroslav Satan

That would be a fantastic draft IMO. Iginla, Hutson and Ritchie are all great prospects. I don’t know enough about the rest of the selections but would be very happy if things went that way for the flames.

I think they’re in the beginning of their true down turn.
However high they pick this year, they’re going to pick higher next year, and probably higher the year after that.
The idea that this can be turned around in less than three years seems farcical.

Nice find and fun! I won the lottery (#2OA) and traded down a few times. Ended up with Buium, Iginla, Hage, Wallenius... Could you imagine! LoL!
