Great point about the growth of youth hockey in Arizona.

It's funny that the Jets moved to Phoenix the year after Shane Doan's rookie season. Now, the Coyotes are moving to Utah the year after Josh Doan's rookie season.

Just like San Jose, Ottawa, Florida, Phoenix, Columbus, Minnesota, Nashville, Atlanta, Winnipeg, and Seattle.

Technically, because Josh isn't going to hit the 25-game threshold, next season will be his rookie season.

He pays a billion in expansion fees and the arena must he built. He has 5 years to get this done.

Honestly, I'm still suffering whiplash over how quickly this came together after the organization has limped through the vast majority of its time in Arizona. I'm wondering what made this happen so quickly compared to the seemingly endless parade of past crises.

From what I remember, Atlanta to Winnipeg came together very quickly as well.

I think you remember correctly.

I'm guessing that some #### went down regarding that land auction and, like Wile E. Coyote, they just ran out of road and ACME didnt have anymore tricks up their sleeves.

And like that cartoon Coyote, the legs went flailing in the cartoon air as he goes over the cliff until the immutable Law of Gravity took effect.

On a positive side though, as a hockey fan, it is nice to know that there were triggers available to be immediately pulled. Its a desirable product.

Probably the realization that an arena couldn’t be built in under 2 years. And the Jazz owner probably brought all his bags of $ to the table and said it should happen now. Nothing happened until the Jazz owner started getting pushy.

I think it had been happening behind the scenes longer than was reported in the media. Sidney Crosby's Hat hinted at it for at least 3 months before the announcement. I expect this is quite a bit further along behind the scenes too.

I would add that some people think that a hockey team is a gm , players and coaches. It takes a lot of individuals to run the business side of things. While players were told they were moving to salt lake , these individuals were probably told they are out of a job. I highly doubt many , if any , personnel from business side will be going

They'll probably be offered relocation, but yeah they're just regular middle class wage earners and some won't be able to move.

Can't wait for the 2027 announcment of expansion.....to Phoenix and Atlanta (and probably Houston and any other US location that isn't the second GTA area team that would so obviusly be a grand slam) LA has two teams and NYC has 3, no reason at all GTA shouldn't have two.

A well liked, deep pocketed owner, who had been courting Bettman for a while. In a growing affluent area, with limited competition for $$$. And public funding for support already earmarked.

The Flames playing in a 'central' division would really put a frown on my face and frustrate me as a fan. They absolutely need to remain in the Pacific division (they're massively closer to the Pacific ocean than they are to.... Nashville?), or at least a new Northwest Division with EDM/VAN/SEA. The travel in a division set up with the Flames in a 'central' division would be ridiculous, and take away from the rivalries that the Pacific division has created - and should remain going forward.

A lot of work to be done to grow the sport in Utah. While it's got the successful minor league Grizzlies, Brigham Young University dropped their sponsorship of the Cougars in 2020, and the University of Utah plays in the lower regarded ACHA. Room for growth in the state's youth hockey programs as well.

I'm sure there's Utahns on this board who can better speak to the on-the-ground situation there.

If I had to put money on it, I would wager that there will be no moving of Edmonton and Calgary to the Central and Colorado to the Pacific. Existing rivalries for all 3 teams involved in the move which the NHL likes and also likely complaints from Calgary and Edmonton due to travel increases.
