In many cases they are much, much larger masses as compared to the single-storey bungalows they're replacing and that they neighbour adjacent to (for now...). Not to say we don't need more of this to make this city more sound from a planning and financial standpoint, but it's stuff like this that makes urbanists come across as effete ######nozzles to a lot of people.
I had to laugh at the remark "If each of these four units comes with a basement suite built in (they definitely won’t all do that)," because that's exactly what happened with the one down the street from me... I'm just glad I'm not the immediate neighbour; to say having an eight-unit rowhouse building go up ain't no big thing for that homeowner is a slap in the face.

We should say having an 8 row house go up beside is a big deal to some people. It just doesn’t matter. Sell your house and move to where the SFH has higher value than density. Yes it sucks but the city needs to densify
We don’t care about your concern is much more honest than there are no concerns.

I don't think that's the right comparison. You have to compare what a new build would be, not what used to be there.
Without these laws, the new build is a 3 story infill with absolutely maxed out lot coverage. In many cases, the massing of the row houses going up is actually smaller. Worst case, they are the same (but traffic! Parking! Garbage bins! Children!).

The opposite of what this council is doing is certainly not "do nothing". You can accomplish a great many things while being somewhat boring as you go about it. The mashup of clowns we have now are accomplishing nothing of value and being anything but subtle about it.

I'll take a million 2024 Council's over the Al Duerr's of the world who we are still trying to catch up from.

So uh, you know that recall petition against Gondek? Looks like at least the website was set up by a Conservative advocacy group. Their Alberta VP is Brad Tennent, ex UCP Executive Director who was also part of Kenny's Kamikaze scandal, with a few other Conservatives (The Director of Harper & Associates, Kenney's campaign director) as part of their corporate leadership
https://www.reddit.com/r/Calgary/com...ondek/kqpuul2/
Doesn't change much because it's not like the petition was going to go anywhere anyway, was always just about getting a few headlines. I just had to chuckle at them trying to make the story about this local hvac technician who had enough and did all this by himself, and yet now it looks like the usual suspects might be behind it

I get that, you're not wrong, I'm just trying to say "Look, there are people who are pissed about this because they have to deal with a level of height/massing that their neighbourhood has never ever had," and pointing out "Well, you know, this was always something that COULD have happened in the past if you had a monster single-detached dwelling or RC-2 side-by-side builder special go up next to you ANYWAY, so it's not as though you have much ground to complain about this," doesn't get people very far.
Klumpenhouwer's analysis is, in my opinion, actually quite superficial and facile. I'm not saying the bungalow owner who has a 13-metre-tall RC-2 box go up next to them has any legal standing to oppose it, but there is a significant amount of property owners in this city who aren't ####ing happy when that happens to them, and telling these people that their concerns are imaginary or otherwise unjustifiable isn't winning them over. Chodes like Chu and MacLean get voted in because they 'listen'; actually listening and being at least a little bit empathetic would go a long way to get buy-in from people who otherwise think urbanists are, as I put it earlier, a bunch of effete ######nozzles.

Alberta United: new conservative group aiming to impact municipal politics
https://calgary.citynews.ca/2024/02/...pal-elections/
Quote:
A group asserting it’s fed up with how municipal government has been operating is hoping to shake things up during the next municipal election.
Alberta United says it has been formed in conjunction with the United Conservative Party (UCP) and other conservative groups, in hopes of having their voices heard.
“I love Alberta, and we need to put it back where it was,” group co-chair Todd Simmer told CityNews.
In a statement to CityNews, executive director of the UCP says Alberta United was not formed in conjunction with the party.
“I can confirm as I am the Executive Director of the United Conservative Party that this group has not been formed in conjunction with the UCP,” Dustin van Vugt said. “There is no connection between our Party and this group.

They had two people trying to grab signatures from everyone coming into Stampede Park for the Roughnecks game on Sunday. "Get rid of Gondek, it'll only take a second!"
As expected, nobody was biting.

I just walked by a large group of people trying to get signatures in the +15 between Brookfield and Bow Valley Square. They were getting more people stopping to sign than I expected. I do enjoy getting yelled at on my lunch break.

I’m pretty sure this is just an email gathering campaign and your name and email will be shared with all the conservative think tanks and other groups to hit you up for money.

We were at the pub tonight, and got roped into visiting for 15 minutes with a half dozen neighbours who also had a table (talk about "the racist grannies of Facebook," fuuuck.)
Anyway, I was also invited to a petition-signing party tomorrow at 11am at one of their houses. It's apparently quite organized where 'somebody' is dropping by with the petition, no idea who (and I won't be going to find out, even though I'm super curious.)
Part of me thinks it's an elaborate scheme to obtain banking information.
