I think even the most loyal progressives in Alberta never thought this was possible. Nenshi to Alberta Party at best.
Why would he even waste his time with the AB Party or Liberals? they would never win.

This is exactly like Klein switching from being a Liberal to a PC because he can read the room.

I just joined the party as well, and will be voting for Nenshi. Fun fact: the last provincial party that I joined was the Conservatives.

That was also so that I could vote in a leadership race. I don’t think I’ve ever voted conservative provincially (only federally).

Though the fact that I can’t remember probably says something about me. Not sure what that is.

Old school politician vs new school. Nenshi has come up through the social media era, where firing up your troops by taking daily shots at your enemies online is a big part of the job.

This is my first time as a card carrying party member so I’m wondering how things proceed from here. Will the NDP candidates release “platforms” like parties do during an election? Will there be debates between candidates? And how is voting done, online or paper ballot in the mail?

For those still on the fence:

This is not a conventional NDP party, it is an offshoot of the NDP that is far more centrist in its principles, and, more importantly, in the eyes of the candidates who will take over the party as the next leader. This party should not be aligned with the federal NDP party except in name and membership structure, which they need to change quickly.

In effect, this is a centrist party that is in need of a rebranding, but also a party where I think people are waking up to the fact that it is the strongest front against whatever the conservative movement in Alberta has become, a shell of its formal dignified self.

Did some digging and found this, rather dry, outline of party policies and timelines regarding the leadership election. Viewer discretion is advised for relative boredom but some good info:

https://www.albertandp.ca/sites/defa...ry_27-2024.pdf

Edit: voting will be either mail in ballot, e voting or phone in voting.

Political tribalism is so engrained in the way we vote its now detrimental to the long-term stability of our province. Good on those in this thread that have taken a look at the reality of the situation, and decided to put their historic colors aside for a more thought-out position.
"This is the Party of Lincoln!"

One of the most obnoxious and out of touch statements.

Last election, many commentators and past PCer's were calling Notley the Lougheed heir. No one seemed to care

Notley campaigned on the legacy of Lougheed in 2015. She governed in his spirit throughout the past four years. She even mentioned him in the last line of her campaign launch speech. This has been deliberate branding and it’s the reason Albertans who remember his reign find themselves so torn.

Notley is, without question, the inheritor of the Lougheed tradition. That’s not to say he was a full on socialist, but Notley isn’t either. I think most Albertans have been shocked to see how pragmatic she has governed, particularly as it concerns natural resources.

Some platform details are out, Ganley and Pancholi

https://www.theprogressreport.ca/platform_tracker

This is why I asked earlier, how close or far will Nenshi be from other platforms?

I'm going to add to my post. Amid all the excitement that Nenshi brings, there are still many questions.

1. How close or far will Nenshi be from other platforms?
2. What riding will he run in?
3. If he moves too far right, will Alberta progressives be happy even if he wins?
4. If s Nenshi-led party moves too far right and loses what happens? It's not just about winning, you have to fight for your values even moreso in opposition.
5. Does Nenshi stay on in opposition if he loses or does he bolt? I always respected Notley fighting in opposition after already being Premier, I believe the first to ever do so.

Based on what he's said so far, I think Nenshi is going to try and stay out of the policy details. He'll give some indicators but let people know he is open to discussing with the party.

It's a short campaign and there's not really time for "politics in full sentences" to borrow a phrase from the past. He wants to talk about values and expanding the tent.

We'll see if that works or not (I suspect it will) but some of the other candidates might come after him with it. That said, IMO the ballot question will come down to three questions:

1. Who do you trust to lead the party and the movement?
2. Who do you think is capable of taking the next step?
3. Who do you think can stand up to Danielle Smith?

Nenshi's entire platform should be:

Do you want to win the next election?

If I'm Nenshi I wear that like a Cape or a suit of armour.

I said it pages back. Purple do-rag, golden hoop earring, Purple Cape. Those cloth belts that Pirates wear, of course, Purple...hell, go for Purple boots. Maybe even Purple tinted sunglasses. Purple Jolly Roger.

The Provincial Purple Pirate Party!

I'd be fighting people out of my way to get to a voting booth.

"He likes Purple! Look at him!!"

So fataing what? He likes Purple. Who GAF? Thats all you got?

Not wrong, although i'd strongly suggest they not rebrand. It rarely ends well. The BC Liberals (conservatives in any other province) rebranded and it has decimated them.

Its ok to exist, at arms length from the Federal party, as the NDP. The values of the party remain the same.
