This thread certainly has come a long way over the last decade or so.

It'll be interesting to see how this goes. My riding is so Blue it may as well be out at Sea. I'm wondering how much that might change.

And to be honest. I probably wouldn't be making this post at all had it not been for the double Glenlivet I just enjoyed But I'll be damned if I just glance by with complete inaction as this province is turned into a breeding ground for the misplaced self-righteousness the UCP party has become., among may other rather despicable traits.

I've seen myself pretty closely related to the policies of Conservatives parties most of my life. But now, its like watching Anakin Skywalker turn into Darth Vader right before my eyes. And I'm not even that big of a Star Wars Fan!

Membership in the ANDP party purchased! Time to do my very small part in booting this UCP party and its incestual, backward thinking beliefs back into 1950. Good Riddance!

But the fact of all the parties Federal and Provincial, the one that aligns best with my view of conservatism is the Notely ANDP by a mile, and it's a joke to call the UPC conservatives.

Farkas is an interesting beast, I think at the moment he really proports to be what a lot of us have spend a lot of time dreaming about in a politician, a guy that can learn from his loses and adjust to realities that end up being different than he expected. I'm not sure if it's 100% true, but if it is good for him.

I am not sure about the others running, but because Nenshi is not so ideologically tied to the party, and because of the integrity aspect of his personality I think he might be able to continue that brand of conservatism in the ANDP. But I do worry about his condescension and bullying making it harder for him when he has to work as a member of a party instead of as a solo actor.

If Nenshi runs, he would probably have my support over the other options.

These posts highlight the biggest difference between the PCs of the 90s and the UCP of today.

The UCP is in ABSOLUTELY NO WAY fiscally conservative. They are socially conservative. They care more about their ideology than they do about saving money or offering tax cuts.

If you were drawn to the fiscal policies of the old PC party, the UCP might not be the party that best matches your viewpoint.

That's also my biggest frustration with conservatism in this province. The UCP isn't the PC's of yesteryear; the current Alberta conservative movement is such much further right now - not fiscally conservative, and very much socially regressive. The ANDP now land pretty much where the Lougheed PC's used to be, and conservatives generally revere him as one of the best premiers this province ever had. The biggest hair-pulling-out thing about all this is that many conversative voters refuse to do research / acknowledge this, if not just outright put their head in the sand and deny the UCP is a different party.

Political tribalism is so engrained in the way we vote its now detrimental to the long-term stability of our province. Good on those in this thread that have taken a look at the reality of the situation, and decided to put their historic colors aside for a more thought-out position.

I actually put a sign on my lawn during the last election and it was promptly stolen.

I guess this is my question: "The riding is hardcore Blue...Provincially. But I'd bet they voted for Nenshi civically. So...if Nenshi wins the NDP will we see smoke coming out of their heads?"

The deep south, where I believe you live, was the worst for Nenshi's performance in his last election so it will probably be the biggest battleground in the next provincial election especially if it is Nenshi leading the NDP. Wards 12, 13, 14 will likely see some very strong campaigning and you guys should have some excellent MLA candidates hopefully.

Well...the government should just do what I've been saying all along. I'm better than some of these schlubs and as such my vote should count for more.

Problem. Solved.

The deep south of Calgary is also electing people like Dan McLean, who by all rights is just a disastrous UCP sycophant at the municipal level. Prefers spending time on the golf course and hanging with Jonathan Denis and Craig Chandler than attending Council meetings.

Nenshi on Jespersen this morning said that he was optimistic about day one membership sales and had a number in his head. When he went to bed sales were TEN times what he hoped for.

I agree with previous poster... CP bump is real

Maybe. As I understand it once she makes it through her upcoming leadership review she's got clear sailing until after the election so she really only has to appease them right now. Probably why we saw the attack on transgender children when we did - throw some red meat to the base to make sure you sail through leadership review.

I won't be surprised at all when 'sane' Danielle comes out of hiding 6 months to a year before the election. It worked for her last time.

Nice work, everybody! As a former Albertan who has been living in BC since 2015, it's been incredibly sad and disappointing watching everything that's been going on back home with all the UCP shenanigans. Over the past couple of years I've thought that maybe the Alberta that I grew up in and have so many fond memories of has been lost and is beyond saving.

But Nenshi and this thread are giving me hope for the future of my once beloved home province. For the sake of all of you guys, including my friends and family who still live in Calgary, I really hope he wins.

I’ve been gone since 2011, and it still weighs on me to see things going this way. Still so many people I care about in the Province. I’d love to see it turn around. It would also give me hope for Ontario… as we are dealing with similar nonsense.

I'm in Ontario as well. I think a Nenshi win could kick the NDP in the butt here. The Libs made a huge and costly mistake by electing Bonnie Crombie as their leader, which it should have been Nate Erskine-Smith. That's going to cripple the party.

Danielle Smith and her ilk are are a disgusting representation of the worst Alberta has to offer.

Bump is real for sure, ANDP finally has a legit leader, someone successful that 'chose' to run for the ANDP. Notley broke down barriers but this is as far as she could go. This is like a big name coach or free agent choosing the Flames.

I think even the most loyal progressives in Alberta never thought this was possible. Nenshi to Alberta Party at best.

Nenshi going to go full Marchand on Smith.

Quote:
“They’re scared. They’re terrified,” says Nenshi.

“How awesome is it that they are so scared. I love it.

“I’ve gotten under their skin already. Obviously Danielle Smith knows I’ve known her for 30 years. I know everything there is to know about her.

“I know how to get under her skin in a way the other candidates don’t. I love they’re so scared.”
That was the problem with Notley. Why did she not bring up the $1.3 billion donation every single time?? She was so timid and weak.

Quote:
“They know they’ve been a terrible government without a single accomplishment to their credit. All they do is pick fights and waste money.

“They know I’ll call them out on it every single time and twice on Saturdays.”
